The Enrollment Initiative Fund has been established to enable you to make that recruitment or retention idea a reality. Want to have a special day on campus for prospective students? Want to establish a partnership with a local high school? Want to initiate an innovative retention strategy? Want to visit another college about a program you are considering? Want to organize a unique competition for students interested in your area of study? Have even more creative ideas?

Funding is competitive and awards will range up to $1,000. Applicants must fill out a brief application describing the activity, its anticipated outcomes and costs. Upon completion of the activity, a brief explanation of the outcomes of the activity will be required. Funding excludes marketing costs already covered in a department’s operational budget and remuneration for college personnel participation.

Funds are available for the 2011-2012 academic year. Applications are due to the Office of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Development by noon on April 29, 2011. Applications are available at Guenther 159 or online. In an effort to have a pool of peer tutors available at the beginning of the fall semester, I am beginning the hiring process this week. This will allow Peer Tutor training to take place right after the semester ends, in the early summer.

I need your input. The most effective Peer Tutors are those you recommend because they have the proper insight to help others to succeed in your courses.

Requirements for Peer Tutors:

- On the Dean’s List or President’s List and have a faculty recommendation.

or

- A quality student who is doing well in your class who seems to have the ability and desire to help others and you recommend them, but they might not be on the Dean’s or President’s List.

Your part:

- Forward the names of students fitting the above criteria via e-mail to d.frament@hvcc.edu or by campus mail to Don Frament, LAC MRV001. Include each student’s Hudson Valley Student ID number if available.

- Advise the student(s) that you are recommending them for the position and that it is a paid student worker ($8/hr) position.

- Please Act Now. Don’t wait until the fall as it takes up to four weeks for students to get interviewed, trained and hired before they can work.

- I am advertising to students in the Hudsonian and on the Student Portal so you may get students asking you for recommendations. In that case a short e-mail to me saying that you recommend them would be fine.

I look forward to hearing from you and I appreciate the time you take to forward student names. It is your input that helps us provide additional quality support to your students.

Thanks,

Don Frament

The New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges was held April 8-10 in Corning, NY. Mary Beth Hampshire, Beth Kane, Sue Kutryb, Peter Stix and Walton Yoder from the MES department and Sohair Habib and Judy Zamurs from the LAC were in attendance. Peter gave a presentation entitled “Going in Circles,” which was very well received.

The results of the state-wide math contest sponsored by NYSMATYC and given to two-year college students were announced at the conference. Hudson Valley came in first!

Our team consisted of Kirk Hansen, Jonathan Gould, Brook Caro, Zachary Menteur and Andrew Mueller. Each student will receive a mug indicating this accomplishment and the “travelling plaque” will be housed in the Math and Engineering Science Department in the BTC for a year.

Kirk Hansen and Zachary Menteur scored fourth and 10th out of all participants in the combined fall and spring semesters. These students each received software. Xiaohu Nian, Pongsakorn Phuaree and Mark Tremblay also will receive mugs in recognition of their high scores on the contest in the fall semester.

Another session of Excel Kindergarten, a non-threatening session in Excel for BEGINNERS. For those who couldn’t make the last Excel Kindergartens or for those who would like to review, this session is designed for people who would like to use Excel, but who are turned off by what seems to be a confusing interface. We will demystify all those lines and boxes and learn to enter data, do simple calculations, and learn where to find more information.

Please e-mail Vonnie Vannier if you would like to join this session, which is limited to 10 participants.
