Charles Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) also earned both First-Team All-Region and All-Conference honors. Parslow finished the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record and will be the top returning pitcher next year on staff.

John Craig (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park) and Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga Spring/Saratoga) each earned All-Conference honors in which they both hit for a .376 average on the season.

The State University Chancellor’s Award for Excellence is one of the highest honors presented by the SUNY system.  This award is intended to recognize individuals who exemplify excellence in one of six areas: Teaching, Faculty Service, Professional Service (non-teaching professionals), Classified Staff, Librarianship or Scholarship and Creative Activities.  As a SUNY college, Hudson Valley Community College may submit candidates for each category.  The college’s Chancellor’s Award Committees are now seeking nominations for the 2013 – 2014 awards.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit nominations.

Using a multi-camera setup for this remote event, nearly 200 people were able to watch HVCC’s graduation from their computer, iPad or smart phone. Over 700 people watched the live webcast of SUNY Albany’s graduation from all over the world, places such as Turkey, Japan, South Korea, Uruguay, Argentina, the UK, Australia, Columbia and Israel.

As one of VVT crew was taking down one of the robotic cameras following the UA Commencement, a graduate and his family walked by him and asked if, “this was the camera that was streaming the video of the ceremony?”  When told the camera was one of five switched that were used to produce the event’s live stream,  the graduate’s mom  noted that her mom in Columbia (South America) had watched the live stream and loved it. She then jokingly said “My mom probably had a better view than we did.”  The VVT technician smiled and said “yes, she did!”

Once the project is completed the new South Drive will consist of three lanes of traffic with two lanes exiting campus and one lane entering from Route 4.  Also the north/south access roadway, new Cross Road, will be the existing north/south roadway behind the McDonough Complex.

During the reconstruction, South Drive will be closed to all traffic from Route 4 to the current Cross Road and Cross Road will be closed from the McDonough Complex to Higbee Hall.  Appropriate detours will be in place to allow for north/south vehicular access and also to allow for  east/west pedestrian access.  Additionally “D” lot (located behind Lang Hall) will be closed to parking.

At this time we are working out what will be the most practical way to re-route traffic while allowing the contractor to accomplish his work. It appears that we may be able to keep the parking garage open for some of the summer, however, it will most likely only be the east entrance that will be able to be used. No matter which detours we set up or which roadways are closed during the upcoming summer, I would like to remind everyone that the 1,500 parking spaces along North Drive will not be touched and will be available for your use all summer. Additionally all of the lots east of McDonough also will be available all summer long.

When the existing Cross Road elimination/reconstruction is completed there will be a “drop off” circle in front of McDonough and another  “drop off” area south of Higbee Hall. The remainder of the current Cross Road will become pedestrian green space which will eliminate  pedestrian/vehicle confrontations.

Also included in the project will be modifications to the loading area behind the Campus Center as well as modifications to the two existing staff parking areas located east of the campus center.

Parking lot “C” ( located south of Hudson Hall) also will be repaved and reconfigured as part of this project and that work may require the temporary closing of the lot while the work is performed.

As this is an extensive project, I am asking everyone to obey the detours that will be set up.  There will be no pedestrian traffic through the construction site except at designated detours.

Inside Higher Ed

The library will be offering five iPads for extended loan over the Summer Session I and II.  Loan periods will be for 12 days and will begin on May 20.

iPads are due no later than the date specified and cannot be renewed. Borrowers must agree to complete a survey after using the iPad to assist the library in developing the iPad lending service. We are very interested in feedback to further develop this program and to encourage use of mobile devices in the teaching/learning environment.

The  iPads do require the use of a wireless internet connection.

United Sisters of New York, Inc., established in 1999, is based in Rensselear. The organization collaborates with other community-based agencies that provide educational, economic and career resources for women of all socie0-economic backgrounds.

Pompey said he was thrilled with the honor that with so many local colleges constantly upgrading their campuses to attract students, it is critical that he continue to use his influences as an educator to be a vehicle for students to attend Hudson Valley Community College. “To meet my goal it is necessary for me to go above and beyond. The most rewarding part of the ceremony was that four of my former students were also award recipients,” Pompey said.

Kozak was the school’s first ever Rawlings Gold Glove award winner last season in which he also earned All-Conference honors. Earlier in the season he earned Region III Player of the Week when he hit 16-26 during an eight-game stretch. Kozak finished the regular season as the #1 hitter in the Nation with a .537 average. He finishes 9th in Vikings history with 94 hits and 3rd in stolen bases with 39. This past season, Kozak recorded two hits or more in 17 games, recorded a hit in 31 out of 35 games, reached base safely in every game except for one, and only struck out once all season long in 121 at bats.

It is only 17 days away and we are almost at our team goal of raising $5,000! HVCC team members include Eric Kiel, Scott Freedman, John Heiser and Roger Pinke. The HVCC team riders will be riding the 25 and 50 mile courses.

This work has meant nights, weekends… time when other tasks had to be put off, time when leisure and fun were thought about and left for another day. The unselfish and effective work done by the “Middle Staters” is no less than humbling. I hope you will accept my sincerest thanks and I hope you will know that your work on the Middle States Self-Study is deeply valued.

Day after day, police officers in every corner of America suit up, put on the badge, and carry out their sworn duty to protect and serve. They step out the door every morning without considering bravery or heroics. They stay focused on meeting their responsibilities. They concentrate on keeping their neighborhoods safe and doing right by their fellow officers. And with quiet courage, they help fulfill the demanding yet vital task of shielding our people from harm. It is work that deserves our deepest respect — because when darkness and danger would threaten the peace, our police officers are there to step in, ready to lay down their lives to protect our own.

This week, we pay solemn tribute to men and women who did. Setting aside fear and doubt, these officers made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the rule of law and the communities they loved. They heard the call to serve and answered it; braved the line of fire; charged toward the danger. Our hearts are heavy with their loss, and on Peace Officers Memorial Day, our Nation comes together to reflect on the legacy they left us.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2013, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 12 through May 18, 2013, as Police Week. I call upon all Americans to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Police Week
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Vikings struck first in the second when Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) drove in Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) to take a 1-0 lead. Erie came back in the fifth to go up 3-1, but Adams hit a solo home run to pull the Vikings within one. The Kats would add four more runs to earn the 7-3 game one victory. Adams led the team with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Charles Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) and Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) each added two hits in the loss.

In game two, the Vikings took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Erie answered back with two of their own. The Kats would blow the game open in the fifth with nine runs to end the game. Parslow gave up two earned runs through four innings to earn his first loss of the season, finishing 7-1 in his freshman campaign.

Spring 2013 student access to Blackboard courses will end early Saturday morning May 18, 2013. It is difficult to give an exact time because disabling enrollment is a “process,” so students will be disabled at different times during the process.

The Blackboard system will begin disabling student enrollment access via Snapshot early Saturday morning and should be complete — barring any unforeseen technical complications — by 8 a.m. Saturday morning, at which point no student will have access to spring 2013 Blackboard courses.

Instructors, if you want to have all students in your course disabled at exactly the same time, you can make your course “unavailable” at the date and time that you determine (for example, if you want them to lose access Friday at midnight or even Thursday). If you choose to make your course “unavailable” earlier than Saturday, it would be helpful to post that information or e-mail your students, so they are not confused by different access policies between multiple courses.

Incompletes

• All Spring 2013 students given a grade of I (Incomplete) will be able to access the spring 2013 courses again in Blackboard  after grades are posted by the Registrar
• Students who have an I (Incomplete) will remain enrolled in their Spring 2013 Blackboard course until either the grade converts or 30 days into the Fall 2013 semester.
• If faculty have assigned any student a grade of I (Incomplete), they must make their spring 2013 course set to be “available” in the Course Settings area in the Control Panel or the student will not be able to access it.

Anyhow, back to the trans-dimensional gateway. This gateway is marketed under the name “Laugh and Learn Learning Home” (http://www.toysrus.com/buy/baby-toys/interactive-toys/fisher-price-laugh-learn-learning-home-playset-c6327-2265260). It appears to be some sort of device that might teach a toddler how to open a door, push some shapes through a hole, pick up their mail (which would invariably be bills), and other citizen-type activities. Innocuous enough I guess. But ask yourself, why would a toy have, as its main focus, a door just plopped in the middle of anywhere. Think about it, why would the toddler, possessing some modicum of common sense not merely walk around the door? There is infinite space on either side of the door, but to go through the door would require effort, coordination, and concentration. Fisher Price is well aware that the majority of Americans would typically take the path of least resistance, so why the door? In addition, why, oh why does it need batteries??

This has led me to the unavoidable conclusion that this is, indeed a trans-dimensional gateway. This is not to say that if the toddler passes through the door that anything particularly amazing would happen. This gateway needs a key or a jumpstart or something. I have brought it to a electric car charging station and crossed the wires with the battery terminals to no avail. I obtained a flux capacitor from a local junk yard, put the gate in the back seat and drove 88 mph. Other than a traffic ticket, nothing. I also found a number of ancient Egyptian characters and put them in the correct order according to Stargate. Other than a warning that somehow came through my iPod from Ra himself that I should let him rest, nothing.

Near the end of my wits, I awoke from a particularly difficult dream about Air Purifiers and genetic sequencing, and I came upon the idea. Using common household products, I could create an energy of such magnitude that it just had to work. I went down to the garage, put the plan into action and lo and behold, it WORKED. I placed the gateway in my front yard, started the contraption and opened a GATEWAY. It was open for about 6.4 seconds, long enough for me to snap a picture. I have included that proof for you. Now I will readily admit, there is some Photoshop involved in the picture. I do not want to give the general public the key to creating the energy force lest it be used for anything other than opening trans-dimensional gateways, so I took it out of the shot. The gateway closed in a colossal flash of light and I have not been able to open it since. Hence I am selling this as a non operational gateway.

So if you choose to use this as it is intended by the Fisher Price company, you are free to do so. It lights up and does all the silly non-gateway functions it is supposed to; $25 and it’s yours. My wife would like me to sell it because she informs me that I have three children and that I should spend some time with them.

Hudson Valley finds itself in familiar territory as they played at Erie last season in sub regionals. The Vikings dropped both games, 16-1 and 3-2.

Hudson Valley tacked on two more runs in game one to earn the 5-1 victory. Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) led the team with two hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Schenectady broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning, which ended up being the game winning run. Jonas Goodell (Columbia/East Greenbush) led the team with two hits, a run scored and a stolen base. Alex Helenek (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Matt Leonardo (Colonie/Colonie) recorded the teams two RBIs in the loss.

The Vikings had already clinched a post-season berth, but will wait for official confirmation on who they will play this weekend in a best-of-three series.

Larry and Patricia Moffitt lost their home in Bennington to a fire, that also claimed the life of their son, Scotty. Scotty was an individual with special needs and had a personality that would light up any room. Larry Moffitt is out of the hospital and recovering from his injuries; however Patricia still is in the hospital recovering from burns and injuries sustained during the fire. Both Larry and Patricia have a long road ahead of them; the loss they have sustained is absolutely heartbreaking.

Dwight Marvin Library maintains a print subscription to CHE. The most recent issues are available for browsing in the Current Periodicals Collection display on the first floor. In addition, the research database Education Research Complete provides full-text access for current and past issues.

In response to recent inquiries from faculty and staff, the library has prepared a subject guide which links to the most current content available full text online, as well as links to back issues. This guide is now available at http://hvcc.libguides.com/che.

The library also is investigating options to reinstate the campus subscription directly from the CHE website through consortial purchasing with other SUNY libraries. We will also consider cancelling other resources in favor of the CHE online subscription if there is sufficient campus interest. Erin Sawyer was chosen for her paper, “Stuck in the Middle: Middle Class Voting Behavior and its Determining Factors.”  She was nominated by Associate Professor Sushmita Chatterji of the English, Modern Languages and English as a Second Language Department.

Ms. Sawyer will be recognized at the annual Student Honors and Awards Reception on Thursday, May 16.

Foundation awards must be finalized in late April. The librarians understand that this time frame eliminates the end-of-spring-semester papers from consideration for that given academic year. Papers that receive a grade of A after this year’s April 26 deadline can be submitted for the following academic year’s award. Recipients who have moved on to another institution or are out of the area will still be included on a plaque in the Marvin Library, receive a monetary award, be recognized at  Student Honors and cited in the commencement program.

All of the Raiders’ six runs were unearned as the Vikings produced errors at inopportune times. Hudson Valley stranded runners on base in every inning except for the seventh. Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) led the team with three hits and a run scored, and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) added a pair of hits in the loss.

It seemed as if Fulton-Montgomery carried the momentum over to game two, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first. Hudson Valley tied the game in the second, but the Raiders answered back with four more runs and held the Vikings scoreless for the 5-1 victory. Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) had two of the three Viking hits, scoring one run and recording one stolen base.

On a side note, with two Adirondack losses to Herkimer on Tuesday afternoon, the Vikings clinched a spot in the post-season but will not know their seed until Thursday evening. Hudson Valley wraps up the regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Schenectady slated for 2 p.m.

Hudson Valley was recently awarded a $272,960 grant from the State University of New York’s High Needs Program to sustain and expand its biotechnology training programs. The funds will be used to create career-specific course modules tied to the needs of employers in the Capital Region biotech sector. Additionally, funds will also be used to purchase equipment that will be used in the modules.

The college is at the tail-end of a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor that allowed it to greatly expand outreach and accessibility to its Biotechnology degree and certificate programs. The new grant will continue that work begun in 2010 and help link more career seekers to places like Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Taconic, AMRI and the New York State Police Crime Investigations Laboratory, each of which plans to expand their workforce in the next year.

A survey of greater Capital Region companies found that there is a shortage of highly-skilled technicians for the biotechnology/biomanufacturing industry, and that a stronger pipeline of educated techs is needed. In addition to driving people into the college’s degree and certificate programs, the new grant will help the college develop more intensive, module-based courses based on specific needs. A current entry-level laboratory skills course that will begin this month attracted more than 100 potential students.

“We really have a diverse group of biotechnology employers in this region. Companies like Taconic and Regeneron and academic institutions like UAlbany and RPI have differing needs when it comes to their lab technicians,” said Biology, Chemistry and Physics Department Chairperson Dr. Peter Schaefer. “We can set up a multi-faceted approach to train students for specific needs. Some courses may provide entry-level laboratory skills and other courses may focus on specific topics like Good Manufacturing Processes and regulatory compliance.”

In order to provide broader access to the training, the college has created two additional training hubs – one at Albany High School and another at Averill Park High School. Labs in both schools have been renovated to meet the standards of a modern biotechnology lab.

In two games this year against Jefferson, Parslow has pitched two shutouts allowing just a bunt in the first inning of the first game shutting down one of the top hitting teams in the region. He now moves to a perfect 5-0 record on the hill and is currently 9th in the nation with a 1.57 ERA. Parslow also had a good week at the plate going 5-14 (.357) with three RBIs and three runs scored.

The Vikings head into their final doubleheaders this week against Fulton-Montgomery and Schenectady on Tuesday and Wednesday, hoping to clinch a spot for post-season play.

The baseball team (16-11)  lost the first game, 8-5, but came back and shut out the Cannoneers in game two.

Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) threw a perfect game to shutout Jefferson, 10-0, in five innings due to the mercy rule. Fifteen batters came up and 15 were sent down, as Parslow never issued a hit or walk, striking out six on the afternoon. Earlier in the season, he threw a complete game one-hitter against Jefferson in his first collegiate start and now improves to 5-0 on the season. Statistically, Jefferson is the top hitting team in the Region entering today’s games. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs in the first and four in the second. John Craig (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park) led the offensive attack with two doubles and four RBIs.

The Vikings rallied late in game one, scoring three runs in the seventh but fell just short. Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) led the team with three hits and an RBI, and Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) went 2-2 with two walks and a run scored in the loss.

The Vikings traveled to Clinton Sunday for noon doubleheader.

Hudson Valley got on the board early with five runs in the top of the second inning. The Vikings had four consecutive doubles to start the inning by Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy), Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville), Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) and Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy). They put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, scoring nine runs to go up 16-0. The nine-run inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun from Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) and a grand slam blasted by Sunkes. Sunkes led the team going 4-4 at the plate with a single, double, two homeruns, seven RBIs and four runs scored. Andrew Kramer (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) went five strong innings, and Cooper McGowan (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) came in relief to combine for the complete game shutout.

The Vikings got off to a hot start again in game two, scoring in each of the five innings. Scaccia hit his third homerun of the year in the fourth inning, finishing the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) each added two hits in the victory. Sunkes picked up the win on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings, while Jarrod Ford (Hoosic Valley/Schaghticoke) and Matt Gallup (Christian Brothers Academy/Scotia) came in in the fourth and fifth to help combine for the shutout.

The Vikings travel to Fulton-Montgomery on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.

The students pictured have just presented their Capstone papers. The Capstone presentation is their last assignment before graduation from Cazenovia this May.

To bridge the physical distance with the presentations, Dr. Mary Handley, program director of Human Services at Cazenovia College, connected to a Hudson Valley Community College videoconference classroom to see her students’ presentations utilizing Cisco Telepresence Jabber, a desktop videoconferencing software.

By utilizing this technology, Dr. Handley was able to see and hear each student and their PowerPoint presentation simultaneously. “The technology is amazing, and the presentations were crystal clear,” said Handley. “This final presentation is the culmination of the student’s work in the program and the college’s cutting edge technology helps them shine! The combination of technology with academics exemplifies the learning experience of the future — it’s here, now.”

Viking Video Technologies worked with Cazenovia’s IT department to install the software, which allows people at any location to join those on campus. Cisco Telepresence Jabber is being used at Hudson Valley for ITV Distance Learning, college employment interviews, departmental meetings and to connect with guest speakers.

Paul Bennett (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) earned Second-Team All-Region at the midfield position. A sophomore out of Glens Falls, Bennett led the Vikings with 28 points, recording 20 goals and eight assists.

Sophomore goalie Andrew Reilly (Bethlehem/Bethlehem) earned Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year. Reilly played all 540 minutes of Viking action in goal, ranking fifth in the Nation with a 64.2 save percentage and sixth in the Nation with 203 saves.

Sophomore Joe Moore (Schenectady/Schenectady) was an anchor as a defensive middie all season and earned All-Conference honors at the position.

The men finished the season with a 4-5 overall record.

Jenna Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich) received the award for women’s tennis and Landon Moore (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga) received the award for football.

Brophy received All-Conference honors and earned a Region III Singles Championship this season for the tennis team. She was a perfect 9-0 after winning the Region III Championship and never lost a set until Nationals. Brophy received a #2 seed at Nationals and fell to the eventual National Champion.

Moore earned First-Team All-Conference honors in the Northeast Football Conference, as well as All-Region honors. He led the Vikings with six sacks on the year and 16.5 tackles for loss. Moore also forced three fumbles, recovered one and blocked a field goal attempt.

There were 66 recipients of the award this year. Student athletes were nominated by their campus athletic director and their credentials and accomplishments are then reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from across SUNY as well as the provost’s office.

“These outstanding students are SUNY champions not only in their chosen sports but also in our classrooms, with an average GPA of 3.59 among them,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Congratulations to this year’s honorees, to the professors and coaches who mentored them, and to the many faculty and staff on our campuses across the state who supported them.”

Last week, Kozak had at least one hit in each game (eight total), going 16-26 (.615) at the plate, in a week where the Vikings took seven out of eight important divisional games from Mohawk Valley and Columbia-Greene. In the eight games, Kozak recorded seven RBIs, scored nine runs (scored in all eight games) with nine stolen bases.

Coming off the school’s first ever Rawlings Gold Glove award last season, Kozak is having another remarkable year. He has had at least one hit in 22 out of 24 games, and has reached base safely in all 24 games. Kozak is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak and is second in the Nation with a .581 batting average.

The Vikings host its final contest of the season with a 9-inning game against Holyoke today at 4 p.m.

Hudson Valley took a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, and Lauren Aitken (Maple Hill/Schodack) delivered a walk-off RBI single to win the game. Maggie Miller (Maple Hill/Schodack) pitched a complete game, striking out five to earn the victory on the mound. Katie Traver (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) and Sierra Bailey (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) each recorded two hits in the big win.

The Vikings fell behind early in game two and couldn’t recover. Miller came in relief, pitching five solid innings with six strikeouts to keep the game close but it wasn’t enough. Emily Johnson (Tamarac/Wynantskill) and Sam Mattey (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) added two hits apiece in the loss.

The softball team finishes the season with an 8-12 overall record.

We are beginning the process of creating our pool of peer tutors for the fall semester. Your input is requested to help make this a successful venture. Please take the time now to recommend students as tutors so that students in your classes next semester can go to the Learning Centers for help from students you have recommended. With your input we can plan for peer tutoring more effectively.

• She/he is a quality student who is doing well in your class and seems to have the ability and desire to help others and you recommend them, but they may not be on the Dean’s or President’s List.

The women close the regular season on Saturday at the Genesee Invitational at the Batavia Country Club.

The Vikings put two runs on the board in the first inning of game one, and tacked on four more in the fifth and sixth to earn the 6-0 victory. Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) was outstanding on the hill throwing a complete game shutout, striking out eight and walking none. Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) leads the Nation in batting and added three hits, a run scored and two stolen bases. Mike Brienza (Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake/Ballston Lake) came in in the seventh to close out the game to earn the save. Lushkevich and Craig led the team with two hits each, and Parslow added a double and three RBIs in the victory.

The Vikings host its final game on the year in a 9-inning game against Holyoke on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Jarrod Ford (Hoosic Valley/Schaghticoke) picked up the win on the mound going six strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and four strikeouts. Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) led the Vikings offensively with three RBIs and a homerun. Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs), Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) all recorded two hits, combining for three RBIs and four runs scored in the win.

Trailing 7-3 in the sixth inning of game two, the Vikings went on a rally to score three runs. Lushkevich had a two-out double, cutting the lead to one. The Twins added another run in the bottom half of the inning, and Hudson Valley trailed by two heading into their final at-bat. In the top of the seventh, Kozak led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) drove in Kozak with a double down the left field line, making the score 8-7. Scaccia came up with an RBI single up the middle that plated Adams, knotting the score at eight. Sunkes had yet another big hit on the day when he singled in Scaccia to give the Vikings the lead. Hudson Valley scored again on a Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) two-out hit that drove in Sunkes. Andrew Kramer (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park) came in to slam the door and earn the save, retiring the side in order to end the game. Sunkes and Scaccia each recorded three hits, and Adams and Lushkevich chipped in two RBI’s apiece in the comeback win.

The Vikings hosted Columbia-Greene Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The Vikings fell behind early in game one, and could never make up the difference. Meghan Roullier (Columbia/Wynantskill) led the team going 2-3 with a double, and Maggie Miller (Maple Hill/Schodack) and Shayla Morris (Berlin/Berlin) each recorded a hit.

Hudson Valley trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth inning of game two, but Corning would score four runs and then tacked on four more to hold on for the win. Sam Mattey (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) led the Vikings going 3-3, and Katie Traver (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) added two hits in the loss.

We are beginning the process of creating our pool of peer tutors for the fall semester. If you enjoy helping others and have a few hours a week to devote to a part-time on campus job then Peer Tutoring may be just the thing for you.

Requirements for Peer Tutors:

• On the President’s or Dean’s List and have a faculty recommendation.
• Be a quality student with a recommendation from a faculty member for the course in which you wish to tutor.

Your part:

• Pick up a Peer Tutor Application in the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) located on the lower level of the Marvin Library Learning Commons or print the application.
• Ask a faculty member for a recommendation and have them send it to Don Frament via e-mail (d.frament@hvcc.edu) or interoffice mail (Don Frament, MRV001).
• Return your completed application to Don Frament in the LAC (Marvin Library Learning Commons, lower level).
• Once the faculty recommendation is received you will be contacted.
• You must successfully complete an interview and Peer Tutor Training in order to be hired.

Peer tutoring is a paid student worker ($8/hr) position.

Hudson Valley rallied in the top of the seventh inning when Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) scored on a sacrifice fly from John Craig (Shenedehowa/Clifton Park). The Hawks capitalized on a two-out error in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory in game one. Lushkevich led the team with two hits including a double, two runs and a stolen base, and Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) added two hits in the loss.

The Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning when Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) scored on an RBI single from Scaccia. The Vikings tacked on another run in the seventh to get the two-run win. Cooper McGowan (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) came in relief to earn the victory on the mound, allowing no runs and striking out five. Kozak continues his tear at the plate going 3-5 on the day with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. He was hit by pitch twice and also issued a walk to reach base safely six times between the two games. Kozak is now batting a Nation leading .600 on the season.

The Vikings travel to Columbia-Greene on Saturday for two games starting at 1 p.m.

This year’s student is Sean Quackenbush. Sean is graduating this semester with an Associate’s in Science degree in Physical Science.

The Cornell program is very competitive. It only accepts three to four students each year and takes place at the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences.

Each student received a mystery basket of ingredients and was allotted 75 minutes to prepare a salad or appetizer and an entree with a vegetable and a starch.

Professional chefs from the Capital District evaluated students based on their preparation skills, cooking techniques, time management, meal presentation, taste and flavor and overall creativity. The panel of judges included Stefan Watts from Smith’s of Cohoes, Nick Hammond from Beff’s on Everett Road in Colonie and Justin Englneri from Portofino’s in Latham. All three judges provided feedback to EOC’s Culinary students, who were given a mystery basket of ingredients and asked to create an entree, appetizer, salad or soup.

JaQuan Mensah earned first place, Keith Henry received second place and Sha’kiyla Davis placed third.

In a pitcher’s duel that was scoreless going into the fifth inning of game one, Hudson Valley finally got on the board with three runs. Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) managed to work out of the late jam, striking out the next two batters to end the game. Temple pitched a complete game, recording eight strikeouts to earn the win on the hill. Kozak finished the game going 3-3 with an RBI, run scored and two stolen bases. Adams and Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) also contributed two hits apiece.

Charles Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) retired the first 12 batters he faced in game two, en route to a complete game win, which included seven strikeouts. Parslow helped his own cause at the plate with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kozak had another big game with three more hits, two RBIs, a run scored and three stolen bases. Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) and Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) added two hits each in the six-run victory.

The Saratogian covered the Girls in STEM program held Saturday at TEC-SMART.

The Times Union provided advance and post coverage of the storytelling program, Children at the Well, held Sunday in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center.

The men finish the season with a 4-5 overall record.

The Vikings took an early 3-2 lead in game one, but a seven-run fourth inning put the Timberwolves up by six. Hudson Valley made a late rally in the seventh inning but fell two runs short. Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney), Bradley Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) and Mike Sunkes (Catholic Central/Waterford) each added two hits apiece in the loss.

In game two, Craig tripled in the sixth to pull within one run, but the Timberwolves struck back with another run in the seventh to extend their lead to 5-3. The Vikings made it interesting as Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) had an RBI triple with one out to pull within one, but was stranded on third to end the game. Craig finished the game with a double, triple and two RBIs, and Lushkevich also recorded a double, triple and an RBI.

On Saturday, the baseball team (8-6) split with SUNY Adirondack (8-9) on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings won game one in eight innings, 12-5, but lost game two, 12-10.

What are the upgrade plans? Why are we doing this?

Blackboard upgrades of the past have happened every few years and as a Blackboard user at HVCC you have probably experienced several major Blackboard version upgrades. New features, functionality and fixes have made the adjustment worth the time and effort as you improved your course, deployed new activities and integrated with publisher content.

You have probably noticed, however, that the technologies of the web and your local computer are changing very rapidly. Browsers, security features, media plugins and other critical tools are updating faster and more often than ever before. Due to these rapidly changing computing and web environments and the need to maintain a secure environment, Blackboard has changed the way it will be upgrading its product, now and in the future.

In the past, faculty and students might see a major version change every few years, while in the background, ITS and DL staff were testing and applying small patches and technical changes not very noticeable to most end users. Now, major Blackboard changes will be more noticeable and more frequent as Blackboard has been making upgrades to the product in quarterly service packs. Every odd numbered service pack is mostly patches, but every even numbered service pack has features and functionality changes that will impact to some extent the look, feel and design considerations of courses.

At the moment, HVCC is on service pack 7, which puts us 4 service packs behind the current release. The longer we wait to move to a current version of Blackboard, the more incompatibilities with browsers, operating systems and other web and computing tools users are apt to experience. However, frequent upgrades have the potential to be disruptive to faculty and students if not planned carefully.

ITS and DL staff have been working on a change management plan to systematically upgrade Blackboard while providing faculty with extensive lead time on new versions. Using multiple servers and a careful distribution of resources, we have a plan that provides advance access to new versions so that:

• faculty can see what their existing courses would look and act like in each new version by having access to a training server
• new online and web enhanced faculty could train in the version they would use live
• faculty would have the necessary time and support to make edits due to new features and functionality change
• faculty do not have to move their courses for the upgrade – their courses will be there and upgraded automatically

We will be upgrading every August to a new version of Blackboard. ITS and DL will test new versions in late fall and early spring.  A “sandbox” will be available for faculty in the new version beginning at midterm of the spring semester, through the summer and several weeks into the fall semester. (This first spring cycle is starting a bit later and with preliminary configurations. We have a preliminary release of the training server now, as we continue testing and finalizing technical needs for plugins and migrations.)

Ultimately, the upgrade plan will be the same every year. Details will be provided in a chart on the HVCC Blackboard Portal and frequent communication will keep everyone informed. Below is a visual guide to what users can do and where they can do it.

Circle K advisor Sherry Best said the student-run service organization has been reaching out to local food chains in the hopes of receiving donations. They hit upon a sympathetic ear with East Greenbush Hannaford manager Kim Hanson.  Best said Hanson has agreed to donate non-perishable food to the college food pantry on an ongoing basis.

On Friday, April 19, Best’s husband, Jim, delivered 12 cases of food from Hannaford to the Campus Center’s Student Activities office – everything from breakfast cereal and canned soup to turkey stock and stuffing mix. “We are so happy to see this. It really means a lot to the students that we can help them out,” Student Activities Program Assistant Susan Smith said.

Circle K advisors Jen Eaton and Sherry Best unload food donated to the campus food pantry by the East Greenbush Hannaford.

“It’s an ongoing need and it’s great to have this kind of commitment from one store,” Best said.

The Student Activities office is always looking to re-stock the campus food pantry, which provides basic food supplies to students who are often dealing with jobs and child care responsibilities on top of their school work.  A competition among departments and college offices is held each year that awards a “Giving Cup” to the one who donates the most food to pantry. Last year, ten departments collected 6,054 items for the food pantry.

The connection with Hannaford may provide a healthy boost to the food pantry’s coffers but the need is ongoing and the Student Activities office continues to encourage donations from faculty and staff members across the campus.

Circle K International is a service organization formed to help the community through various service projects. It is part of an umbrella of organizations led by Kiwanis International. For more information about the Circle K chapter at Hudson Valley, contact Best at s.best@hvcc.edu.

Many students from other countries are here without family, so I am having a party for them immediately after commencement. The party will be at my home in Stephentown, about 25 minutes from campus. I will be serving a variety international foods (but NO alcoholic beverages).

Hudson Valley will be competing against RPI, RIT, Syracuse, SUNY IT, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Canton, West Point, Cornell, Clarkson and ETS from Montreal.

This change results in simpler tracking of when items are due; mark your calendar or watch the Chronicle for a reminder to renew or return books. This is an increase from current three-week loan.

• Financial responsibility to replace grossly overdue, lost or damaged items borrowed from Dwight Marvin Library, interlibrary loan or other libraries accessed through reciprocal eligibility as an HVCC employee. Borrowing privileges are suspended until replacement fees are settled. Outstanding fines will be noted on employee checklist at departure from college service or retirement.

Effective May 20, regularly circulating library items borrowed by employees  have a September 15 due date. Effective with the start of the Fall semester, library items will have a due date of December 13, the last day of classes. At the conclusion of the fall semester, the due date shifts to the last day of the spring semester. That cycle will continue in subsequent years with the three fixed due dates.

Dwight Marvin Library currently expends scarce resources to replace library items that are damaged or lost by employees due to the current vague language about employee financial responsibility. The revised policy clearly articulates the borrower’s responsibility for items on loan from Dwight Marvin Library and other lenders. These revisions are consistent with the student borrowing policy.

By the end of April, employees with items on loan with due dates prior to January 2013 will receive a letter requesting the return or renewal. Borrowers will bear financial responsibility for the replacement of items that are not returned or renewed by May 17.

The Vikings rallied in the fifth inning after trailing 3-0, putting four runs on the board. Maggie Miller (Maple Hill/Schodack) picked up her second win of the year allowing only three runs, none of which were earned. Miller, Alyssa Hand (Columbia/East Greenbush) and Sierra Bailey (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) each recorded a hit and a run scored in the win.

In game two, the Vikings jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Hand led the team at the plate with a single, double, triple and two RBIs. Shayla Morris (Berlin/Berlin) and Meghan Roullier (Columbia/Wynantskill) added two hits apiece, and Morris also picked up her first win of the season on the mound.

Nicholas Viola (Niskayuna/Schenectady) picked up his first win of the season coming in relief with runners on first and third in a 3-3 ball game in the top of the fifth, with only one out. Viola struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) answered in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double, and Jon Bonarrigo (Albany/Albany) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-3. Mike Verschelden (Chatham/Chatham) closed out the last two innings, striking out three to earn the save in game one. Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) each scored two runs in the win.

The Vikings mercy-ruled the Cougars in game two as Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) and Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) combined to pitch a three-hit shutout. Craig led the Vikings going 3-3 at the plate with two singles, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base. Fenton and Kozak each reached base in their three plate appearances, scoring two runs apiece.

The Vikings are currently riding a five-game winning streak and will play at Schenectady on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

I learned today that the campus food pantry shelves are empty. This comes at a difficult time for many of our students as they are already dealing with the worry and stress of papers, exams, final grades, and graduation (not to mention balancing work/school, taking care of siblings, being single parents, caring for elderly parents – all the struggles and challenges of HVCC students).

I implore you to pick up a few extra groceries this weekend and deliver them to the food pantry on Monday. Ramen noodles, pasta and sauce, cookies, and granola bars can go a long way toward helping a student continue to be successful at HVCC.

Over the past few months, I have been thrilled by the generosity of the HVCC campus in donating items to the pantry and  surprised to learn how quickly these items fly off the shelves with so many students in need.

The winners were: first place  – Maple Hill, second place – Troy, third place – South Colonie.

This was the first time in the history of the Viking Challenge that the same high school – Maple Hill – won twice in a row. The high school also took first place in 2012’s competition.

The Maple Hill team consisted of coach Kaitlin McGann and team members Will Noll (captain), Lauren Braithwaite and Alex Flood. Troy was coached by James Hoffmann and team members were Ethan Quinones (captain), Rafik Mekhaldi and Dan Tedesco.  South Colonie’s coach was Doug Rosenberg and the team members were Courtney Benoit (captain), Amanda Volk and Brendan Jeffers.

The first-place school received a Netbook donated by Lenovo and each of the winning team members received a $500 scholarship to attend Hudson Valley.

All members of the three winning teams also received scientific calculators donated by Vice President Jim LaGatta and each of the three winning teams received Encyclopedia Britannica Reference software donated by Mark Welcome of Interactive Solutions.

The Challenge format is based upon the rules of the Trivial Pursuit game. The schools send three-person teams which are comprised of high school students in grades 9-12. Each team has a designated student captain and a faculty coach. There are two elimination rounds and a final round. The order of play for each team is randomly determined based on a drawing before the event and teams have a minute to answer each question until they get a wedge or answer incorrectly. There are five categories for the game and once a team has won wedges for all five, they win the game, followed by second and third place.

There is a reception before the competition begins, and the students are treated to pizza and wings. Throughout the game, all students have the chance to win raffle prizes purchased through the Viking’s Cove Bookstore and donated by the Faculty Student Association.

The 2013 CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge will be held this year on Thursday, May 16 at 6:25 p.m. in Albany. Walkers, joggers, runners, skippers and hoppers are welcome to join the Hudson Valley Community College team again this year.

The registration fee has increased from $18 to $22. With the increased registration fee, they are removing the old “report your-own-time” scoring method and will use chip timing instead. They also are giving out long sleeve instead of short sleeve t-shirts.

Fulton-Montgomery jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Vikings answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Gallup (Christian Brothers Academy/Scotia) gave up three hits in that inning, but settled down and didn’t issue another run or hit for the rest of the game. He finished with nine strikeouts and only one walk, en route to his first win of the year. Hudson Valley added another run in the second to tie the game at 3-3. The Vikings broke the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs, cruising to a 10-3 victory. Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) led the attack with two hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) reached base all four times recording two hits, two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base. Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) and Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) each recorded two hits in the win.

Charles Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) picked up where he left off in his last outing, throwing his second consecutive complete-game shutout in game two. Parslow allowed only three hits, striking out five and issuing only one walk in the win. Lushkevich recorded another two hits, bumping up his season average to a .461, and Kozak, Brad Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) and Jon Bonarrigo (Albany/Albany) all recorded RBIs. Everyone in the Vikings lineup reached base safely at least once, as the Vikings mercy-ruled the Raiders in the fifth inning.

The recipients are: Devin Brady of Ballston Lake; Eugene Corcione of Albany; Fatima Hussain of Troy; Zachary Pearson of Ghent; Robert Spain of Albany; and Matthew Whalen of Troy.

Devin Brady was elected vice president of the Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students at two-year colleges and she was named to the President’s List at the college for three consecutive semesters. Named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, she was elected freshman senator during her first year at Hudson Valley. She continued to participate in student senate meetings via teleconferencing while completing an internship at Walt Disney World in the spring 2012 semester. Brady also serves as a peer tutor for math and business law in the college’s Learning Assistance Center.

Captain of the men’s soccer team, Eugene Corcione was selected to play in the NJCAA Region III All Star Game. He was twice named to the college’s President’s List and served as Student Senate Vice President during the 2012-2013 academic year and as treasurer the previous year. He is a board member of the college’s Faculty Student Association and has been very active in volunteering in his community and on campus.

Fatima Hussain was elected president of the college’s Alpha Xi Simga chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students in two-year colleges. She also has been very involved in campus activities, having served on the Environmental Sustainability Committee and as a staff editor of the Hudsonian student newspaper. Named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, she is a three time President’s List honoree, a Phi Theta Kappa Scholar and was a member of the college’s team that placed fourth out of 30 teams in the 2012 New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges competition.

Robert Spain has been a member of the Army Reserves since 2004 and currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was twice deployed to Iraq. Named to the Deans’ List for three consecutive semesters, he is a member of the Armed Forces Club and the Concrete Canoe Club, which competes in concrete canoe construction and racing against other engineering schools around the Northeast. He is an active volunteer firefighter in his hometown.

Zach Pearson has continually been a President’s List student during his time at the college and also has been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He is an active volunteer in his community and also is active in a variety of stage productions throughout the Capital Region. On campus, he serves as a tour guide for the HVCC Admissions Office.

Named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, Matthew Whalen is a four-time President’s List honoree and currently serves as Senior Class President at the college. A Phi Theta Kappa Scholar, he also is Vice President for Public Relations for the Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of that international academic honor society. He is a member of the New York Army National Guard.

All six Hudson Valley students were honored along with other recipients from across the State University system on April 4 at a ceremony at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created 16 years ago to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary members of their college communities who are graduating. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

Free Food… For Thought is an open group being formed with the intention of meeting monthly to discuss issues related to the heart of what we do here at HVCC… teaching.

The initial meeting will be held on Monday, April 15 in Campus Center 150 at noon. The first part of this initial meeting will involve discussion of what the group would like to see as to topics, times, and places for future sessions, followed by our inaugural subject to chew on, “Excuses, Excuses.”

“Excuses, Excuses” will be a discussion of how to deal with those students who either authentically have one thing after the other go wrong in a semester or who are fabricating such situations, and how to tell the difference. Or should we be involved in trying to tell the difference? What are your classroom policies as to absences, and are they working for you and your students? How do you deal with students and their struggles with the changes that come with first attending college? Come and share your ideas or questions around this very real and very timely dilemma.

As of the spring 2013 semester, the Center for Academic Engagement (CAE) is the home of three “veteran mentors,” students Chelsea Valente, Paul Gaffney and Michael Ray. The trio’s task is to serve as peer liaisons for fellow veterans on campus, helping them navigate the benefit process, assisting them with finding academic support or just welcoming them to the veteran community on campus. The work study program is funded through the federal Veterans Administration.

“Our main goal right now is to let people know that they are here on campus, to spread the word among students and faculty,” said College Success Specialist Aaron Nooney, who works with the mentors in the CAE.

Since the beginning of the semester the veteran mentors also have been reaching out to current students using veteran benefits by phone. “We’re in the process of doing that outreach,” Gaffney said last week. “It’s time consuming but it’s beneficial to make that personal connection.”

Veterans continue to have a strong sense of kinship when they transition out of the military, and in some cases, they can find that kinship again on campus with fellow veterans. “I think that’s one of our roles,” said Gaffney. “We are here to connect them with support services and dealing with the benefits side, but a lot of vets miss just that sense of camaraderie.”

The vet mentor program is the latest college effort that aims to provide a welcoming atmosphere for student veterans. It follows the recent opening of the Armed Forces Study Room – a dedicated library study space for student veterans – and increased engagement by the Armed Forces Club on campus.

In the fall, the college hosted an Instant Admission Day dedicated for prospective students who are veterans or family members of veterans, and for the past two years, the college library has hosted a Veteran’s Day exhibit honoring current students, faculty and staff members who have a personal or family connection to the military.

In addition, the college’s Committee on Military and Veteran Affairs, which includes a wide cross section of faculty and staff members, meets each month to discuss new ways to serve this growing population of students.

Recent studies have shown that colleges need to provide a strong but flexible support system if they want to retain student veterans. More than 350 current Hudson Valley students receive VA benefits to further their education.

The mentors represent a good cross section of the veteran population here on campus. Ray, who is in the Computer Information Systems program, served as a US Army Ranger from 1979 through 1992. Valente’s tour of duty in the Marines was from 2007 to 2011, and she also is in the Computer Information Systems program. Gaffney, a Polysomnography student, was in the Air Force from 1991 through 2006.

“We have the right people for the job, and it’s exciting to see them take this on,” said Nooney.

A mentor is available in the CAE, second floor of the Campus Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Armed Forces Study Room, second floor of the Marvin Library Learning Commons.

Phillips and Hoyt are currently completing their baccalaureate work at the University’s Department of Art.

At its March meeting, the Board of Trustees approved a tobacco-free policy amending the college’s Code of Conduct: “Chewing tobacco or using any product or similar product or device such as pipes, cigars or cigarettes or personal vaporizers is prohibited on the College premises and in vehicles on campus.” [Article 5.2.24(b)]

A “tobacco-free HVCC” promotes a healthy and safe environment for all, as well as aligns the college with Tobacco-Free SUNY expected to take effect Jan. 1, 2014. The SUNY Board of Trustees approved a resolution in June 2012 that — with state legislative approval — will require a 100% tobacco-free campus environment to include all campus buildings, parking ramps and facilities, and off-campus facilities.

Many SUNY campuses already are tobacco-free, as are most colleges and universities in the Capital Region. Under current New York State law, smoking is banned on all SUNY campuses in indoor areas and in vehicles owned or leased by SUNY institutions.

Prior to the tobacco-free policy effective date of Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, additional information and resources will be provided to students, faculty and staff, and campus signage will be updated.

Hudson Valley’s tobacco-free policy was drafted by a committee appointed by Dr. Alex Popovics, vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Development, and chaired by Claudine Potvin-Giordano, clinical coordinator in College Health Services.

Maggie Miller (Maple Hill/Schodack) picked up her first college win, recording seven strikeouts in game one. Miller also scored two runs to help her cause, and Alyssa Hand (Columbia/East Greenbush) led the Vikings with two doubles and two RBI’s. Meghan Roullier (Columbia/Wynantskill) and Katie Traver (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) each recorded two hits in the win.

The Vikings came up just short in game two, falling by one run. Roullier led the Vikings with two hits and two stolen bases, and Samantha Mattey (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) drove in two runs in the loss.

The softball team hosts North Country for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Sarah Ashback (Columbia/East Greenbush) led the Vikings with a 135 to finish in third place overall. Haley Knight (Chatham/Canaan) came in fourth with a 138 and Breezy Knight (Clear Creek/Biloxi, MS) shot a 152 to finish in fifth place.

The women travel to the Delhi Invitational on Friday, April 12 for a noon start.

The Generals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and the Vikings could never recover. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) scored the team’s first and only run in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch to walk in the run. The Vikings threatened the next at bat when Brad Adams (Catholic Central/Troy) flied out, taking a ball deep to the left-center warning track. Herkimer tacked on one more run in the sixth for the 4-1 victory.

The Vikings got off to a better start in game two when Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) led off the game with a single, and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) drove him in with a double. Lushkevich led off the third with another single, and this time Craig ripped a double to bring him in, making it 2-0. Herkimer struck back in the fourth with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Anthony Scaccia (Voorheesville/Voorheesville) came up with a big two-out, two RBI single in the sixth, giving the Vikings a two-run lead heading into the final inning. Once again, Herkimer answered back with a clutch two-out hit scoring two runs to tie the game at 4-4. It wasn’t until the Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh when the Generals threw a wild pitch that scored the winning run with two outs.

The Vikings host Fulton-Montgomery for a pair of game on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.

The Vikings took an early 3-2 lead, but 10 unanswered goals by the Lakers proved to be the difference in the game. Paul Bennet (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) led the Vikings with three goals and one assist. Bryce Sinisgalli (John Glynn/Elwood) and Liam Christensen (Bethlehem/Glenmont) added two goals apiece, and Andrew Reilly (Bethlehem/Bethlehem) recorded 29 saves in goal.

The men host their first game of the season on Wednesday, April 10, against Herkimer at 4 p.m.

The Vikings outhit Herkimer 4-2 in the first game, but couldn’t manage to get Josh Temple (Cohoes/Cohoes) any run support. Temple went the distance on the hill, only giving up two hits in the loss. John Craig (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) and Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) were the only two players to pick up hits in the game, each with two.

Hudson Valley fell behind 6-0 early in game two and could never recover. Craig hit a 380 foot homerun over the left-centerfield fence to score the first two runs in the fourth. Jonas Goodell (Columbia/East Greenbush) added an RBI single in the inning and that was all for the Vikings.

Andy Kozak (Sidney/Sidney) picked up where he left off last season, proving why he earned a Rawlings Gold Glove last season, as he made a diving catch in left-center field early in the game. Kozak went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and stolen base. Alex Lushkevich (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) and Brett Fenton (Catholic Central/Troy) both went 2-4, each recording a double and scoring two runs apiece in the loss.

In game two, Charles Parslow (Fonda-Fultonville/Fonda) tossed a one-hit shutout in his college debut on the mound. The only hit of the game came off a bunt in the first inning, but after that Parslow shut the Cannoneers down. He retired 20 of the last 23 batters (hit by pitch and two errors), finishing with five strikeouts and no walks. The Vikings lone run came from Alex Helenek (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) on a wild pitch in the second inning in the pitchers dual.

The Vikings travel to Herkimer on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.

I am pleased to announce that Hudson Valley has partnered with Higher One, Inc., a leader in refund management services, to offer our matriculated students more refund options.

Beginning in the summer 2013 semester, students will have the option of having  their refunds deposited directly into their personal bank accounts, and/or the opportunity to open an account with Higher One and have their funds credited there. Students also will continue to have the option of receiving their refund by check, which will be mailed to them by Higher One.

Students can choose the refund method that works best for them!

This change applies to all matriculated students, including those who are not receiving financial aid but who might be receiving a refund, i.e. if they overpaid or their charges were reduced due to schedule changes or course cancellations.

Matriculated students will receive an HVCC Refund Choice Card in the mail after they pay their tuition bill. They will use the card to authenticate themselves and identify their refund preference. Once they’ve identified their preference, they’re done. They will receive any and all refunds in accordance with that choice, as long as they are enrolled at Hudson Valley or until they change their preference (which they can do at any time). Specific instructions will accompany the card.

Students will begin receiving information regarding our new refund process this month and the Cashier’s Office has a Web page with additional information: Higher One.

The Earth Day celebration on Thursday, April 25 features eco-friendly vendors, environmental demonstrations and information, a seed and plant exchange and a cell phone collection booth.

On that day, Bill Reinhardt, former senior project manager at NYSERDA and cofounder of SustaiNYSERDA, discusses how peak oil and climate change issues will affect the potential career paths of students in a talk titled, “Energy, Environment and a Sustainable Economy: What Does This Mean for Today’s Students?” Taking place from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium, Reinhardt’s talk is sponsored by the college’s Voices committee and is the last in its spring 2013 series of lectures.

In conjunction with Earth Day, the Sustainability Committee is sponsoring an Electronics Recycling event on Friday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot off Holliday Drive (next to BTC). Recycle used electronics free of charge.

The Sustainability Committee is now collecting seeds, bulbs and small rooted plants for the Earth Day exchange. All must be non-invasive species, preferably natives, and seeds must be no more than one year old. You have probably noticed however, that the technologies of the web and your local computer are changing very rapidly. Browsers, security features, media plugins and other critical tools are updating faster and more often than ever before. Due to these rapidly changing computing and web environments and the need to maintain a secure environment, Blackboard has changed the way it will be upgrading its product, now and in the future.

In the past, faculty and students might see a major version change every few years, while in the background, ITS and DL staff were testing and applying small patches and technical changes not very noticeable to most end users. Now, major Blackboard changes will be more noticeable and more often as Blackboard has been making upgrades to the product in quarterly service packs. Every odd numbered service pack is mostly patches, but every even numbered service pack has features and functionality changes that will impact to some extent the look, feel and design considerations of courses.

At the moment, HVCC is on service pack 7, which puts us 4 service packs behind the current release. The longer we wait to move to a current version of Blackboard, the more incompatibilities with browsers, operating systems and other web and computing tools users are apt to experience. However, frequent upgrades have the potential to be disruptive to faculty and students if not planned carefully.

ITS and DL staff have been working on a change management plan to systematically upgrade Blackboard while providing faculty with extensive lead time on new versions. Using multiple servers and a careful distribution of resources we have a plan that provides advance access to new versions so that

• faculty can see what their existing courses would look and act like in each new version by having access to a training server
•  new online and web enhanced faculty could train in the version they would use live
• faculty would have the necessary time and support to make edits due to new features and functionality change
• faculty do not have to move their courses for the upgrade – their courses will be there and upgraded automatically

We will be upgrading every August to a new version of Blackboard. ITS and DL will test new versions in late fall and early spring.  A “sandbox” will be available for faculty in the new version beginning at midterm of the spring semester, through the summer and several weeks into the fall semester. (This first spring cycle will start a bit later and with preliminary configurations. We are aiming for an April 15th preliminary release of the training server as we continue testing and finalizing technical needs for plugins and migrations.)

Ultimately, the upgrade plan will be the same every year. Details will be provided in a chart on the HVCC Blackboard Portal and frequent communication will keep everyone informed. Below is a visual guide to what users can do and where they can do it.

Unable to be in the area during the meeting, Viking Video Technologies assisted Chairman Conrad Lang and Trustee Neil Kelleher in setting up the videoconferencing from a remote location. Lang and Kelleher were able to see meeting content and the members in the board room simultaneously.

This technology allows board members to participate if they cannot be here on campus and also has applications for our academic community as well. Cisco Telepresence Jabber is being used in many ways here at Hudson Valley for ITV Distance Learning, college employment interviews, departmental meetings and to connect with guest speakers.

The software is easily installed by Information Technology Services and support for Cisco Telepresence Jabber is provided by Viking Video Technologies.

The work will be on exhibit at SUNY System Administration until late May when it will be sent to the museum for exhibition from the second week of June until September 18. After the exhibit is installed at the museum, it will be juried and the winners from the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 Best of Shows  will be chosen.  There will be a reception on Tuesday, June 18, at the New York State Museum where the winners of the Fall and Spring Best of Shows will be announced.  There will be three Best of Show winners and four Honorable Mentions.

The Fine Arts program’s class of 2013 has had great success in securing scholarships to their transfer institutions, thus far. Five students have been accepted for transfer to the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with scholarships ranging up to $23,000 annually.

In addition, Fine Arts student Anneliese Holmes has been accepted for transfer to The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, Cooper Union offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.   Cooper is one of the most selective colleges in the United States with an acceptance rate of only 7.7 percent.   All accepted students are granted a full scholarship and attend the college at no cost.

Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. We’re walking on Sunday, April 28 because we want to do something about this.

The money we raise will support March of Dimes research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. And it will be used to bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.

This is also called a tree directory or course map. On the main menu there are six small icons above the name of the course. The third one to the right of the plus sign will open your main course menu in a new window. Select that one and then in the new window select the middle icon on the top right; it looks like a folder. Once that is clicked, you can hold your mouse over it and then select “Expand All” to see your course map.

This is a good way to see the layout of your whole course at once.

Please be aware that the college will be closed Friday, March 29 through Tuesday, April 2.

It is strongly recommended that a student discuss the impact of either course withdrawals or a total withdrawal with the Financial Aid Office before completing the process.

Course Withdrawals
A student may withdraw from a course or courses prior to the end of the day on Friday, April 12, 2013. A student must obtain the approval and the signature from his or her advisor or department chair for course withdrawals. The official date of withdrawal is the date that the completed form is received in the Registrar’s Office. Discontinuance of class attendance or notice to the instructor does not constitute authorized withdrawal.

Course withdrawals from a term may jeopardize current and future financial aid eligibility.

Total Withdrawal
A student may withdraw from all registered courses within a term prior to the end of the day on Friday, April 12, 2013. To complete a total withdrawal, please visit the Registrar’s Office in the Guenther Enrollment Services Center, Room 136. The official date of withdrawal is the date that the form is completed.

A total withdrawal from a term may jeopardize current and future financial aid eligibility.

If a student is unable to complete either of the above in-person, a letter will be accepted as long as it is postmarked and mailed through the U.S. Postal Service by April 12, 2013. Any request received after the deadline will not be accepted.

There is no restrictions to the coupons and they are good for all showings, including IMax and 3D movies. The coupon is good until June of 2014.

Miss Kay Kay Snugglegrumps

Miss KayKay Snugglegrumps is in search of a home since being abandoned in Albany when her family moved. She is 3-4 years old, healthy, solid build, incredibly affectionate, but doesn’t appear to like other cats. (Dogs are an unknown.) She has a bad tooth that might need attention down the line, but is spayed and recently visited the vet for a check up and shots. She loves to look out windows and sniff fresh air, but doesn’t like he paws touched.

This is a reminder that the degree/certificate application deadlines for Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 graduation are as follows:

Spring 2013 — Thursday, March 28, 2013
Summer 2013 — Friday, June 14, 2013

If you plan on graduating either in May or August, a completed degree/certificate application must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by the appropriate deadline as noted above. Please note that a completed degree/certificate application requires department chairperson/advisor signature. Applications received after the noted date will be considered for graduation for the following semester (i.e., an application received on March 29 will be considered a Summer 2013 application and an application received on June 15 will be considered a Fall 2013 application).

Important Note:  Summer 2013 graduates are invited to the May Commencement ceremony. This will be the only commencement ceremony that you can attend. If you wish to participate and have your name appear in the Commencement program, you must have a completed degree/certificate application submitted by the March 28 deadline.

Myth 1: Don’t have the time to take classes on-campus, online classes are easy, right?
Online classes by nature can be more demanding due to the increased reading (online lecture materials, plus the textbook) and the required interactions between course materials and classmates. Online students also are more accountable for the same assigned workload as on campus classes and it’s expected that they will spend as much time if not more with the material. On average, students (on campus or online) should spend about two hours of studying for every hour of class time (this includes reading, writing papers, projects, preparing for tests). Time management is critical to be successful as you juggle your busy schedule with your studies. Therefore, if you don’t have time to take a class on campus, do you really have the time to take one online?

Myth 2: Procrastination is OK in online classes
Online learners need to be self-disciplined, motivated and able to work independently since it’s their responsibility and it is essential to complete course work by deadlines. Online classes provide flexibility, in terms of when the assignment is done, but students need to be able to manage this flexibility accordingly and not use that flexibility to put off doing the work.

Myth 3: Anytime, Anywhere…Well Not Exactly
What’s nice about online classes is that you can take one from anywhere in the world and you can work on assignments at anytime of day. However, online classes are structured learning environments and there are specific deadlines and due dates for course work. The instructor sets deadlines in order to keep everyone on track and interacting with each other as a whole.

Myth 4: I can do everything in a single online session
Online classes are not just about completing course work. You are often required to regularly participate in online discussions and if you only log in once or twice during a week your grade could suffer. Online classes are rich integrated learning environments just like the traditional classroom. Therefore, they require attendance several times a week.

Myth 5: I will be taught how to use a computer in my online class
Instructors will expect that you have the necessary skills to come to class. The instructor’s role is to focus on the subject specific course material, not teaching you how to use a computer or the Internet. If a course requires the use of specialized software than you can expect to be taught how to use that specialized software. Prior to starting an online class, you should plan to know how to use a computer, the Internet and standard online tools such as e-mail, web browsers, word processors, etc. on your own.

Myth 6: Computer problems are acceptable excuses
Online learners are responsible for having or finding access to a working computer with an Internet connection that meets certain minimum requirements. Most instructors won’t accept the excuse that your computer was broken. Be advised that mobile devices (tablets, smartphones, etc.) may not have all the necessary features and functionality needed to successfully complete an online course.

Myth 7: Personal attention doesn’t exist in an online class
Actually students who have taken online classes say they feel there is more attention from their instructors than face-to-face classes. Most instructors are logging on daily, checking for questions on assignments, watching out for assignment problems, etc. and usually get back to students right away. Remember you can always call your professor or stop by an office if possible.  Many instructors also offer “virtual office hours” where you can contact them during a certain day and time either via e-mail, chat or webinar.

Myth 8: I can “hide” and remain anonymous in an online class
Most online classes have discussion components and some have group work. Therefore, you need to be accountable and cannot remain anonymous. Class discussions allow students to interact with the course material by sharing ideas, opinions, asking questions, etc. with both classmates and the instructor. Most students find that there is more discussion and interaction in online classes because more classmates participate.

Myth 9: Online classes do not follow the regular schedule
Although you are able to work on your coursework when you want to, online courses are NOT self-paced courses. They follow the same term calendar as far as registration, paying, policies, midterms and finals, etc. as on-campus classes. They have assignment deadlines just like an on campus course. Not meeting these deadlines and falling behind in their coursework is the leading reason why online students do not succeed.

Myth 10: Online classes are just online textbooks
Online classes are integrated learning environments that offer a structured framework for course materials. Online course materials include textbooks, student guides, Internet sites, videos and more. There also is discussion and collaboration among classmates that helps you apply knowledge to develop skills.

The weekend was a sign of things to come: warmth, rebirth, rejuvenation. The anticipation of spring may trigger in us insight, inspiration, healing, and increased physical activity. We look forward to the cleansing power of spring each year. This time of the year is often an opportunity for emotional/spiritual cleansing. Regarding the latter, popular spiritual writer Gary Zukav offers some wisdom:

The spring wakes us, nurtures us and revitalizes us. How often does your spring come? If you are a prisoner of the calendar, it comes once a year. If you are creating authentic power, it comes frequently, or very frequently. It comes each time you recognize a frightened part of your personality as a part of yourself that you were born to challenge and leave behind. It comes when you realize that a painful emotion (such as anger, jealousy, fear or resentment) is not who you are, but a message to pay attention to what you need to change in yourself in order to move into your full potential.

Bill Reinhardt, former senior project manager at NYSERDA and cofounder of SustaiNYSERDA, discusses how peak oil and climate change issues will affect the potential career paths of students. His talk focuses on how college students can best plan their education in anticipation of this changing economy. A question and answer session follows the presentation. The Internet connectivity has been restored as of 4 p.m. March 5, 2013. The component causing the issue has been identified and is being serviced.

Hudson Valley Community College is experiencing a communication issue with one of the network components that controls access to the Internet. This issue began at 11:42 a.m. on March 5, 2013. All available personnel and vendors are working on the problem.

This issue is our top priority to resolve.

Anthony Salamone, Phil Jenkins, Mike Cavanaugh and Scott Freedman worked to turn one of the rooms at the Global Center into a remote production studio complete with lighting, multiple cameras and audio recorders. Staff from SUNY Central Administration and Deborah Stanley, president of Oswego College (Mr. Roker’s alma mater), also were in attendance for the shoot.

Mr. Roker came in, had some make-up put on and was ready to go. He spoke for about 20 minutes after which he graciously agreed to be filmed for some additional B-Roll. The shoot went very well and Mr. Roker had some great things to say about Oswego College and the SUNY system.

This marks the third Celebrity piece that VVT has been involved in. The first shoot was with Billy Baldwin and the second was with Susie Essman.

Defensive back Travis Riggins (Central Guinnett/Albany, NY) signed his national letter of intent with Avila University on a partial scholarship.

Riggins spent the past two seasons with the Vikings football program, having never played before. He will bring experience in the secondary to the Eagles defense. Riggins stated, “I’m excited for the opportunity and thankful for everyone in the program that has helped me. I know I have a ton of work to do to be a successful student-athlete at the next level and I look forward to the challenge.”

Craig Wojtaszek (Averill park/Averill Park) led the Vikings with a total of 2205, and Michael Hartmann (Coxsackie-Athens/Earlton) finished with a total of 2082.

Megan Rzeszuto (Colonie/Schenectady) had a strong outing finishing fourth in the All-Events standings on the women’s side. Rzesuzuto totaled a 2129, good for a 177.4 average. Her fourth place finish also earned her All-American honors.

The men’s bowling team will close out the season at the sectional qualifiers next weekend in Allentown, PA.

The Vikings trailed by eight at the half, but managed to outscore the Panthers 34-17 in the second half to move on to the semifinals of the Regional Tournament. Brandon Dean (Flagler Palm Coast/Bunnell, FL) led all scorers with 22 points, while Jose Reyes (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) added nine points and 10 assists. Jeffrey Kruzinski (Mohonasen/Schenectady) recorded nine points, including a go-ahead three-pointer, and Nate Monson (Cohoes/Cohoes) added nine points, all coming from behind the arc.

The following day the Vikings (20-12) lost to SUNY Delhi (28-4), 69-48, in the semifinals.

Hudson Valley fell behind early and could never make up the difference. The Broncos shot the ball well from the outside, while the Vikings struggled shooting the ball. Jose Reyes (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) led the Vikings with 17 points, and Brandon Dean (Flagler Palm Coast/Bunnell, FL) added 14 in the loss. Dean was also named to the All-Tournament after averaging 18.0 points in the two games.

“Brendan is a shining example of the success and creativity of our 3 million alumni worldwide,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “When we shared a sneak peek of this music video at this year’s State of the University Address, the feedback was positively overwhelming. “I wanted to try new concepts and give something back to my college,” said Martin. “My friends and I are all really proud that we went to SUNY schools – because they are affordable and top quality – and so I wanted to create something that other SUNY students and alumni could be proud of. I can’t wait to travel around to the SUNY campuses and share this great new song with everyone.”

Brendan Martin graduated from the University at Albany’s Business School with a 4.0 GPA. He writes from his own experiences and what he went through growing up as a child. Martin is a rapper/song writer who began establishing himself as a promising hip-hop artist in his hometown of Colonie, New York. He has performed alongside Mac Miller, Lupe Fiasco, Big Sean, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dog and many more.

Brendan has gained a substantial following after winning SUNY Albany’s “Battle of the Bands,” T. Pain’s “Motivated” competition, and most recently, Hot 97’s “Who’s Next” competition opening for J. Cole while sweeping the “Battle for the Best” competition at SXSW. Martin performed at Summer Jam sharing the stage with ASAP Rocky, Big K.R.I.T, Azealia Banks, Pusha T, Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar.

The Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program for the Fall  2013 semester includes two (2) $10,000 scholarships and four (4) $5,000 scholarships to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major of biology, chemistry, biochemistry or a related life-science field.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and be enrolled in an accredited college or university for the Fall 2013 semester. In addition to these qualifications, students must also be legal United States residents, meaning that students possessing appropriate Visa status in order to study in the United States are also eligible.

Students may apply for the scholarship through the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Web site. Applications will be accepted until 11:59:59 p.m. CT on July 31, 2013. Each application will be reviewed and evaluated by a scholarship committee and announced to the chosen recipients by August 16, 2013.

Two presenters from Broome Community College will be presenting at the upcoming Faculty Workshop Day. Lisa Strahley and Scott Corley are experienced forum moderators and work closely with their communities to encourage civic engagement and promote social justice.

We are recruiting now for students and faculty who want to develop the skills to be a moderator for our upcoming public deliberation “Shaping Our Future: How Should Higher Education Help Us Create the Society We Want?” This program is being sponsored by the Kettering Foundation and the National Issues Forum Institute.  The forum will be used as part of a national discussion on higher education and the results from this forum will be part of a national publication being developed on the topic.

She had a career year in her first season playing for the Vikings women’s basketball team. Frasier broke the single-season rebounding record of 353 in just 22 games, which was previously held by Elizabeth Ferenczy. She now holds the record with 396 rebounds.

Frasier recorded a double-double in 21 of the 24 games; including three games which she recorded 20+ points and 20+ rebounds. She finished the regular season leading the nation in rebounding, averaging 16.5 per game.

Reyes ranks seventh in the Region in scoring with 15.4 points per game and first in the Region in assists averaging 7.5 per game.

The Vikings head to Regionals as the #6 seed and will take on #3 Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Friday at 1 p.m.

The Vikings fell behind early and never recovered. William Huber (Arlington/Hopewell) scored the Vikings lone goal on a power-play, assisted by James Murphy (Comsewogue, Long Island) in the first period. The Vikings trailed 6-1 after the first, with no scoring from either team in the second or third. Murphy was also named to the All-Tournament team.

Williston defeated #1 Monroe Community College, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in the Championship game.

Frasier had 21 double-doubles in 24 games this season, and became the single-season rebounding leader at Hudson Valley with 396. Ashley Creighton (Catholic Central/Niskayuna) had a solid performance chipping in a double-double of her own with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Huber is tied with Murphy for most points in the nation with 51, and is tied for most assists in the nation with 24. He is second in the nation in goals with 27, trailing only Murphy who leads with 32. Huber’s play also earned him Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Inella has two goals and 21 assists on the season, which put him in a tie for fifth in the nation.

The Vikings head into the Nationals riding a three-game winning streak, when they take on #2 Williston State College (16-14), out of Williston, ND, on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Reyes averaged a double-double in two games, averaging 15.0 points and 12.5 assists. 63% of the team’s total offense came from Reyes, during a week in which the Vikings upset #6 nationally ranked SUNY Delhi. He tallied a career high 14 assists against Schenectady, and went 5-11 (45.4%) from behind the arc in the two games.

Reyes ranks seventh in the Region in scoring with 15.4 points per game, and first in the Region in assists averaging 7.5 per game.

In the past, the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center has highlighted one or more of its vocational programs, such as Cosmetology, Culinary or Building Trades.

This year the Capital District EOC featured its role in the educational pipeline. Two students who have successfully completed one program at the EOC and moved on to a second program attended the event to speak about their experiences. Tien Phan Nguyen completed the ESL program in the spring of 2012 and is now working on her GED. Michael Richardson started in EOC’s GED program and is now in the Building Trades program. Additionally, the Capital District EOC highlighted the various paths students can take from EOC to career or EOC to college and beyond. Please click here to see photographs of the event.

Capital District EOC staff members Carolyn Clark and Keevin Killikelly volunteered to represent the EOC and assist with transportation and set-up of the display. The support of staff and students made the event a success.

Jose Reyes (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) scored eight of the team’s first 12 points as the Vikings jumped out to a 27-24 lead at the half. Hudson Valley held a lead the entire game until Delhi tied it up with a minute left. On the Vikings final possession of the game, Reyes drove and found Nate Krimsky (Berne-Knox/Berne) for a layup to break the 47-47 tie with only .9 seconds remaining. Both Reyes and Krimsky finished with 14 points each, and Jeremy Taylor (Catskill/Catskill) chipped in 11 in the big win. The Vikings now have won their last five games heading into the final game of the season.

The men close the regular season on the road on Wednesday against #8 Herkimer at 7 p.m.

The men only lost by approximately 100 pins after 54 total games. Michael Hartmann (Coxsackie-Athens/Earlton) won the Region III MVP after winning the All-Events Championship, as well as the Singles Championship. He totaled 942 for four games in singles with a 243 high game, and totaled 1775 for eight games.

The women were led by Megan Rzeszuto (Colonie/Schenectady), who had a high game of 235 for an eight game total of 1566. The Vikings also received strong contributions from Elizabeth Pratt (Lansingburgh/Troy) with a 225-1513, and Chelsea Smith (Hoosic Valley/Melrose) with a 237-1413.

Next up for the men’s and women’s teams is the NJCAA National Championships on March 1-2 in Buffalo.

Raeshelle Frasier (Schenectady/Schenectady) broke the Vikings single-season rebounding record of 353, recording 16 rebounds in the loss to Clinton on Saturday. Frasier now holds the record with 361 and counting with two games to play. She also had 21 points and five assists, while Angelica Smith (Shaker/Latham) added 14 points and six rebounds.

The women travel to Herkimer on Wednesday for a game at 5 p.m.

SUNY Day is the annual university-wide legislative lobbying day at the Capitol. President Matonak and other community college presidents gathered for meetings with SUNY officials and legislative leaders. In addition, each year colleges are asked to showcase an aspect of their institution at a booth in the Well of the Legislative Office Building.

Respiratory Care students Meaghan Leach and Arezoo Teimouri, faculty members Dave Ten Eyck and Ken Riordan and department chair Patty Hyland staffed a booth that explained the college’s Respiratory Care program. Dental Hygiene Department chair Judy DiLorenzo, faculty member Gabriele Hamm and staff member Mary Badger also were on hand also to discuss the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs.

In addition, Viking Video Technologies was on hand to provide video support throughout the lobbying day.
