A safety concern recently was discovered and addressed involving wall-mounted projector screens detaching from their mounts and falling. A review of reported injuries and Physical Plant work orders, shows multiple instances over the past several years. Although reported injuries were minor, this type of incident does have the potential for a more serious injury.
A systematic inspection of all projector screens was conducted by Physical Plant, Instructional Technologies and Environmental Health and Safety to look for early signs of failure such as fatigued S-hooks connected to screen chains, bent brackets or brackets pulling out from a wall. Twenty-one issues were found and repairs completed by Physical Plant.
IT will be including projector screen mounts as part of their classroom readiness checks conducted prior to the start of Fall and Spring semesters. Any issues identified will be corrected by IT and/or Physical Plant. All faculty should be aware of this issue and promptly report any concerns they may notice to Physical Plant for attention. Also, please continue to report even minor injuries through Health Services to allow for correction of concerns and investigation of any trends.
