Friends of Oakwood offer “Murder at Oakwood,” a new tour, on May 12

Don’t miss “Murder At Oakwood,” a thrilling new tour offering by the Friends of Oakwood Cemetery coming up on Saturday, May 12.

In 1870, Oakwood Cemetery was the scene of a sensational murder and suicide involving one of Troy’s oldest families, the Vanderheydens. Troy and Lansingburgh residents were gripped with hysteria during the investigation.

Now, 148 years later, local historian Warren Broderick, dressed as County Coroner Thomas Hurley, will spare no details as he releases the official report of this tragic tale. He will then lead the curious public to the scene of the shocking event and to the shunned murderer’s secret burial place.

This program will fill quickly. Make your reservations today and pay upon arrival; $15/person. Call 518-328-0090. Meet at the Earl Chapel, just inside the Oakwood Avenue entrance to the cemetery, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 12.

The Friends of Oakwood is a not-for-profit volunteer group working to support the preservation and maintenance of the non-sectarian chapel and grounds of this still-active historic 19th-century cemetery.
