“A Woman Ain’t I?” Comes to Hudson Valley Stage on Thursday

The life of Sojourner Truth, a former slave turned abolitionist and women’s rights advocate, is dramatically recreated by actress Kathryn Woods through Truth’s own words and spiritual music on Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon in the Bulmer Communications Center Auditorium.

Staff, students and the general public are invited to this free performance.

Truth, born in New York in 1797, was a slave until she escaped after 29 years. She waged and won a court battle for custody of her infant son who was illegally sold to a Southern slaveholder after slavery was abolished in the state of New York.

In her early years of freedom, Truth worked with Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, as well as the Freedman’s Relief Association near the end of the Civil War. After the Civil War she became an advocate for women’s rights and civil rights for African-Americans.

Woods has worked in Boston, Massachusetts for many years at Theatreworks, People’s Theater, Wheelock Family Theatre and Underground Railway Theatre.

This event is presented by the Cultural Affairs Program.
