Last week the Vikings Athletics Department recognized its student-athletes at its annual Athletics Awards Banquet, including 18 team MVP awards and eight major departmental awards.

Presented to a member of our community who has demonstrated a commitment to our College and our student-athletes.
 
Otto Guenther Memorial Award – Hannah Kreiger and Elijah Washington
Presented to the individual who demonstrates the best combination of academic and athletic success.

Thomas Cahill Memorial Award – Aaron Thorpe
Presented to the outstanding male athlete.

Lester Higbee Memorial Award – Courtney Conover
Presented to the outstanding female athlete.

Dr. Andrew J. Matonak Character Award – Asan Anarkulov
Presented to a student for their commitment and contributions to their team, embracing the character and spirit of the College and athletic department.

President’s Award – Alayna Fredenburg and Joshua McCart
Presented to the student whose hard work, determination, hustle and attitude have enabled them to make valuable contributions to their team, the athletic department and the college.

Paul F. Bishop Coach of the Year Award – Joe Prest
Presented to the coach who exhibits the highest level of sportsmanship, leadership, professionalism and ethics, and who demonstrates the highest level of commitment to his/her sport, the athletic department and, most importantly, to the student athletes.

Willie A. Hammett Award for Excellence in Student Service – President Drew Matonak
Presented to a person on our campus that has shown a willingness to go above and beyond to assist students in fulfilling their potential.

Team Action

Baseball (24-12) — The baseball team earned a trip to the NJCAA Region 3 Tournament for the second straight season after sweeping Tompkins Cortland Saturday afternoon, May 12 at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, NY.

The regional tournament is a four-team, double elimination tournament and is hosted by Herkimer College in Little Falls, NY. The Vikings baseball team will now face Niagara Friday, May 18 at 2 p.m.

Track and Field — The Vikings men’s track and field team finished in seventh place with 41.5 points. The team was as high as fourth place at times and the women’s team was as high as seventh place during competition and finished in 11th place with 18 total team points.

Track and Field All-Americans — The Hudson Valley track and field program had three student-athletes take home All-American honors at the NJCAA National Championships on May 12. In order to receive the title of All-American, an athlete must finish in the top two in their respective events. Elijah Washington, Devin Kipp and Alayna Fredenburg did just that and earned All-American honors.

Golf — The men’s golf team participates in the 2019 NJCAA Region 3 tournament Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14 at the Elm Tree Golf Course in Cortland, NY.
