Celebrate “The Year of The Bird” at Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 2

Exactly 100 years ago, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act was passed to protect hundreds of species of songbirds throughout the world. The Audubon Society, National Geographic Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology are among more than 120 organizations to declare 2018 is the Year of the Bird.

All — including first-time birders — are welcome to join the Friends of Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 2 to learn a little more about the beautiful birds that return each spring to nest there. Stroll to a variety of habitats, and look and listen for all sorts of birds from Bluebirds to Bald Eagles. Checklists will be provided. Bring binoculars if you have them. (A few loaner binoculars will be available.) Experienced birders Clint Anglin, Naomi Jaffe and Heidi Klinowski will be on hand to help. Please wear shoes comfortable for walking!

Plan to meet at 8 a.m. at the Earl Memorial Chapel flagpole, just inside the Oakwood Avenue entrance to the cemetery. The event will end at about 10:30 a.m. Rain date is Sunday, June 3. (Check Facebook for weather updates: https://www.facebook.com/Oakwood-Cemetery-Troy-NY-1503586599718055/.)

Admission is $15 per person, payable upon arrival. Registration is requested at 518-328-0090.

The Friends of Oakwood is a non-profit, volunteer group working to support the preservation and maintenance of the non-sectarian chapel and grounds of this still-active, historic 19th century cemetery.
