Special Olympics seeks volunteers for Summer Games!

 

Special Olympics New York is reaching out to the college community to volunteer at the 2018 State Summer Games, a portion of which Hudson Valley Community College again will host.

Special Olympics is in need of 2,000 volunteers during the weekend of June 15 to 17.

More than 1,500 athletes and coaches from across the state will travel to the Capital Region to participate in eight Olympic-style sports. Competitions include athletics (track & field), aquatics, basketball, bowling, powerlifting, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball.

Opening Ceremonies will be held on Friday, June 15 at 8 p.m. at Siena College. Show your school colors and make Hudson Valley proud! Join the on field cheering sections for the Parade of Athletes, witness the lighting of the cauldron and FIREWORKS to celebrate the opening of the games!

The athletic competition will begin on Saturday, June 16 at the following locations:

  • Siena College
  • Hudson Valley Community College (volunteers needed!)
  • Schenectady High School
  • Shaker High School
  • World Class Gymnastics, Latham
  • Boulevard Bowl

All volunteer opportunities count for community service hours for any school requirement. Sign up as a family or individual! Please pass this information along to anyone you think would be interested in volunteering.

Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities in more than 22 sports. Currently, more than 68,000 athletes are in Special Olympics training programs throughout the state.
