Athletic events are in full effect this week as all seven teams are in action this week.
Cross Country: The Hudson Valley Community College men’s and women’s cross-country season got off to a strong start on Saturday morning as both teams participated in the SUNY Poly Invitational.
The women’s team placed fifth overall with a final combined time of 1:42.14, six minutes off the lead pace. Out of 72 total runners, the Vikings had three individuals finish inside the top-30 overall. Led by Mercedes Planavsky, who finished 15thwith a final time of 18:08 in the 4K race.
The Vikings men’s cross-country team placed third overall with a final combined time of 1:49:30 in the 6K race, just over two minutes off the lead pace. Out of 110 total runners, the Vikings placed seven runners inside the top-40. Jared Craw set the pace for the men’s team as he finished 14thoverall with a time of 20:20.
Football: Hudson Valley Community College football (0-1) opened up the 2018 season with a 41-26 loss to Nassau (2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 1 at home. It was a tale of two halves for the Vikings football program as they outscored Nassau 20-7 in the second half. Nassau put up 28 points in the second quarter and took a 34-6 lead over the Vikings at the break.
Nik Rango had a tremendous collegiate debut in the opening game for the Vikings. He completed 27-of-36 passes for 347 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. The last Vikings quarterback to throw over 200-yards with three touchdown passes was Rafael Hidalgo in 2014.
John Daly finished the game with career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns in a game. Daly compiled 212 yards on 13 receptions and added two touchdowns this afternoon against Nassau. Daly now has 20 catches for 302 yards and three touchdowns in two career games against the Lions.
