This week in athletics

 

It was a busy weekend for the Vikings as all seven fall sports were in action for the first time this season. Last week, we had three NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week honors given to Mercedes Planavsky (WXC), Jared Craw (MXC) and John Daly (FB).

Cross Country: The Hudson Valley Community College men’s and women’s cross-country teams had a great showing at the SUNY Cobleskill InvitationAL on Saturday morning as the women placed second overall and the men placed third.

The women’s team had four of its five runners earn All-Meet medals for finishing inside the top-15 overall. The Vikings were led by Mercedes Planavsky, who finished second overall with a final time of 20:37.

The Vikings men’s cross-country team placed third overall with a final combined time of 2:30:47.04 in the 8K race, just over four minutes off the lead pace. Out of 62 total runners, the Vikings placed seven runners inside the top-25. Jared Craw set the pace for the men’s team as he finished third overall with a time of 28:37.28.

Football: The Hudson Valley Community College football team (0-2) was defeated, 48-14, on the road against regional rival Erie on Saturday afternoon in Orchard Park. The Vikings struggled in the second half as Erie exploded for 34 unanswered points in the final two quarters.

In the second, the Vikings would score, sending the game into halftime trailing 14-7. Nik Rango completed a touchdown pass to Jovan Atkinson for the five-yard score and Nathan Fankhanel connected for the extra-point. Hudson Valley tied the game in the third quarter with 8:27 remaining when Devonte Myles intercepted Erie’s Jack Edwards for a 41-yard touchdown return.

Men’s Soccer: Hudson Valley Community College men’s soccer (3-2) gave a dominating performance on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Clinton 9-0. Freshman Michael Gosh led the Vikings with three goals for his first career hat trick.

Women’s Soccer: Hudson Valley Community College women’s soccer (5-0) continued its winning ways as the Vikings defeated Clinton 9-0 on Saturday afternoon in Troy, NY.

Sydnee Metzold finished the game with three goals and a pair of assists for an eight-point day. She has now scored nine goals and tallied three assists in the Vikings three games this week.

Women’s Tennis: The Hudson Valley Community College women’s tennis team earned a 3-3 tie in its 2018 season opener against Mohawk Valley on Saturday afternoon in Troy.

The Vikings Jacqueline Bornt won her match in straight sets as the team’s number one seed. She defeated Autumn Fallon 6-2, 6-3. Natalie Mercedes, the Vikings only returner also won her match at the team’s number three seed over Mohawk Valley’s Selina Lim 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Volleyball: The Hudson Valley Community College women’s volleyball team opened the 2018 pod season Saturday afternoon at Genesee Community College.

The Vikings dropped their first match of the day to Monroe in straight sets 3-0 (9-25, 17-25, 17-25). Hudson Valley combined for 13 kills and 17 digs with 13 hitting errors in the three-game match.

The Vikings were defeated by Finger Lakes in straight sets 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 21-25). The Vikings combined for 20 kills, 13 assists and 32 digs in the second match of the day.

In the final match of the day, the Vikings here defeated by Genesee in straight sets 3-0 (8-25, 11-25, 21-25). The Vikings combined for 13 kills, nine assists and 20 digs.
