Katrina’s Closet holds annual clothing drive for women’s shelter

Katrina’s Closet is holding its annual clothing drive to benefit Mercy House, an emergency shelter for women operated by Catholic Charities Housing in Albany.

Please consider donating slightly worn:

  • career clothing (suits, blouses)
  • sweaters
  • coats
  • boots

Donations should be delivered to Student Activities, room 210 in the Siek Campus Center. Clothing will be accepted through Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Members of Sisters Incynch, a community service club, operates Katrina’s Closest on campus to assist students needing professional attire for interviews and other occasions. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Sisters Incynch traveled to Louisiana to assist in recovery efforts. When club members visited and interviewed the principals, teachers and students who were forced to relocate, they were inspired to find ways to assist economically challenged students and disconnected populations seeking career success in their own communities as well. Katrina’s Closet was born from that experience, as a way for club members to provide much-needed career and professional clothing for women and men.

The Katrina’s Closet project promotes service learning in many ways by enhancing motivation and tying specific learning goals to community needs. Service learning is embedded in the experience through individual and collective responsibility in the management and operation of the project.
