Code Blue conditions were in effect for Rensselaer County as the temperature dropped below 32 degrees. Faculty and students from the Dental Hygiene Department helped serve hot meals to over 60 homeless people during one of the coldest nights of the season so far.
For the past five years, the department has volunteered during the fall and spring semesters to help our less fortunate neighbors in our own community. Faculty and students volunteer to plan a nutritionally balanced meal along with some comfort foods for good measure. The group then takes over the kitchen at Joseph’s House and begins crafting the meal for the nightly dinner service. Support for these events is always strong as students look forward to giving back to help the community in any way that they can experience first hand. Any leftovers from the dinner service are then brought to the local church that helps shelter those in need on Code Blue nights as well.
In addition, the Dental Hygiene Department raises donations for supplies and toiletries for the residents at the shelter.
