New Blackboard feature: cloud storage and files

As you may already know, many users save their work in the cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc). There is a new feature in Blackboard that allows students to upload assignment files directly from their cloud storage.

This feature does not affect those who use Turnitin assignments.

For faculty who use Blackboard Assignments here are some tips:

1.  When adding files from cloud storage, the system makes a copy of the files in the course. These files are not linked to the user’s cloud. This means that files that are updated in the cloud are not updated in the course. This is true for assignments and faculty content.

2. Currently, assignments submitted from cloud storage, such as Google Drive, use native files that cannot be previewed for in-line grading. These types of files must be downloaded and viewed outside of Blackboard.

3. If you want to use in-line grading, you will need to instruct students who use Google Drive to download their files as Word files (.docx) or PDF files (.pdf) and save to Drive before they Browse Cloud Storage to attach to an assignment.

There are many ways to use cloud storage on Blackboard and the Blackboard App. Please visit the Center for Distance and Online Learning for a quick hands-on demo.
