The Dental Hygiene Department offers two programs: Dental Hygiene AAS degree program and the Dental Assisting Certificate program. All students are prepared as highly-qualified Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants, who are ready for entry-level employment in the dental industry.
Dental Hygiene students are specifically taught that their primary responsibility is to promote optimal health through the provision of preventive and educational services. Dental Assisting students are taught to perform chair side, in the laboratory, understand office procedures and other expanded functions. Both programs satisfy all education requirements mandated by the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions.
In addition, the Dental Hygiene Department requires all students to participate in both dental specific service learning and interprofessional activities throughout their two years in our programs. We regularly partner with numerous groups and organizations within the Third and Fourth Dental Districts (the greater capital region-north to Plattsburgh) to formulate and implement programs to promote both oral and overall healthcare for those in need of services. All Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting faculty play an active role alongside our students to plan and participate in all activities.
Dental Hygiene is a close knit department. We love to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, milestones and special occasions. We sometimes play (kind-hearted but humorous) jokes on one another – all in the spirit of fun! We definitely work very hard but we play hard too, making sure to always see the glass half full and not ever empty!
