Third annual Enter The College Zone introduced middle and high school students to career options

The “Enter the College Zone: Transformation through Collaboration” program introduced over 60 middle and high school students to career opportunities they could pursue through degree programs offered at Hudson Valley Community College.

The third annual event, held in the BTC on Saturday, encouraged students to begin thinking and preparing for college now. Emphasis was placed on earning good grades and participating in extra-curricular activities, athletics, and volunteer programs that help to build leadership skills, as well as increase their application profile and chances for scholarships. During the afternoon, the students observed demonstrations from faculty and student ambassadors, from the Building Systems Technology Department, the Construction, Industrial and Mechanical Technology Department and the Dental Hygiene Department.

The students and their parents were very excited and engaged with the presentations, according to Barry Walston, president of the Black Child Development Institute. BCDI is part of the community outreach partners for leadership, innovation and network group that helped plan the event with the college’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Student Activities Office. Other community partners included the Albany Leadership Charter School for Girls, the Albany School District, the Capital District YMCA, the Liberty Partnership Program, and the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). Special appreciation is extended to the Albany School District and the YMCA for providing transportation for the students.

Walston said he looks forward working closely with Hudson Valley and other community partners to help students get ready for college. For more information, please call (518) 629-7307.
