Library’s Voices series brings event to Cohoes High School

On Wednesday, May 29, the Library Voices Lecture Series offered its first Voices Encore event at Cohoes High School, encouraging 50 students to engage in learning outside the classroom and to consider Hudson Valley as their college of choice. The Voices event was coordinated with the College in the High School program, as well as with Admissions.

The students in the audience heard from entrepreneur and citizen scientist Chad Currin, who described his start-up business BioSoil, and his successes and meaningful failures with worm farming and sustainable, organic environmental practices. Currin encouraged students to make the world a better place and to get started by studying at the college.

According to Marykate Kraus, director of the College in the High School Program, “students who attended… are a part of the high schools’s Future-Ready Pathways program, which is a collaboration between the district, HVCC and University at Albany. The program, funded by a New York State Education Department Smart Transfer Grant, will allow students to earn up to 60 college credits before graduating from high school at no cost to families.”

Currin originally presented in the Fall 2017 Voices series on campus. His engaging and entertaining presentation led to his selection as the first “encore” speaker for Voices. The committee hopes to continue the practice in the future as funding allows. The Fall 2019 Voices series will be announced later this summer. Special thanks to Anne Rappaport, library outreach specialist, for organizing the Encore event, and to Voices Committee members for their support of this initiative.
