New community partnership includes elementary school and interfaith community

In a continuing effort to develop community partnerships with local school districts and the interfaith community, Hudson Valley Community College will assist in recruiting volunteers to participate in an after-school reading and homework support program for elementary grade students at Giffen Memorial Elementary School in Albany.

The Two Together After School Program provides free after-school reading, writing and enrichment programs for students in 1st through 6th grades and individualized reading enrichment programs for students in an environment that fosters a life-long love and enthusiasm for learning. The community project, located at 220 Green St. in downtown Albany, is a collaborative effort with Giffen Elementary School and Macedonia Baptist Church, both located in Albany.

The initiative supports the college’s elementary and middle school career exploration project, the day care parent project, and the interfaith community forum, according to Larry Ellis, associate director of the Center for Counseling and Wellness and club advisor to the Black and Latino Student Union. “It gives our students an opportunity to give back to their communities, to mentor young children, help them become better students and possibly encourage some of the parents to continue their education at Hudson Valley.”

Ellis said he will be encouraging members of the club to volunteer one hour a week to support the program.
