Dr. Ernest R. Rugenstein, an adjunct faculty member in the History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences Department, has been accepted as a participant at the World History for the 21st Century: Redesigning the College History Introductory Curriculum Workshop during the American Historical Association’s 134th Annual Meeting in New York City. He will be a presenter in the online program and the meeting app, in addition to his already scheduled presentation, The Impact of Westward Expansion on New York State Agricultural Prosperity 1830-1900.
The World History workshop will take place on Monday, Jan. 6 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the New York Hilton’s Beekman Room. The 134th American History Association meeting will run Jan. 3 to 6, 2020 in New York City.
This professional development workshop offers an opportunity to explore and articulate the challenges facing instructors in world history courses. Participants will help establish the framework of a collaborative project designed to develop materials, resources, and support for courses for first-year students, particularly in the context of general education courses. Participants will discuss what students bring to the course, university pedagogical requirements, the role of introductory history courses in departmental and university requirements, and the particular challenges presented by teaching world history.
