Members of the Dental Hygiene Faculty and Student Club SADHA volunteered at Joseph’s House and Homeless Shelter on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
The club makes it a priority to give back to the local shelter each semester by designing a nutritionally-balanced meal for the residents of the facility. Club members prep and cook the planned menu to be served on the scheduled date, and the shelter kitchen is taken over by dental professionals. This tradition started with the class of 2013 and has gained popularity among the department through the years.
After the dinner service, students and faculty review oral hygiene instruction on proper brushing and flossing technique and read to the children at the center about their first dental visit. With winter temperatures upon us, it was important to make sure that the residents had a hot meal, and according to staff, all leftovers are donated to St. Joseph’s Church to help any overflow from Joseph’s House. The residents of the shelter were given a “dental pack” complete with toothbrush, floss and toothpaste to go along with the desserts that were left at the end of the night.
Everyone is looking forward to our next visit!
Thank you again for organizing such a wonderful event and allowing us the opportunity to help give back to our community. Being able to speak with some of the families and serve warm meals to them at Joseph’s House was such a rewarding experience. I hope we are able to continue this for years to come! ~ M.
