The Collegiate Academic Support Program (CASP), under the direction of Roy Pompey, is hosting a Male Leadership Day for incoming black and Latino male students on Friday, July 25 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the BTC. Presentations by three recent Hudson Valley graduates and members of CASP, as well as several administrators, are intended to acclimate the students to college life and start them on the path to academic success.
More than 50 students have registered for the event, and a number of parents and other family members also are expected to attend to learn how to have a role in student support.
Pompey cites statistics from the American Council of Education that put black male graduation rates at 35 percent and Latino male rates at 46 percent, compared to 59 percent for white males.
“The goal of the Male Leadership Day is simple,” he says, “We are doing our absolute best to take away reasons for these students to fail. We’re going to prove those statistics wrong at Hudson Valley.”
