Center for Effective Teaching

Welcome to the Spring 2020 semester. For those who don’t know me, my name is Jen Eaton and I am the new Faculty Liaison/Coordinator for the CET. I have been at Hudson Valley Community College since 2002 working as an Advisor/Education Specialist in the Individual Studies Department. I have also been an adjunct for the Math department since 2015.

The mission of the Center for Effective Teaching (CET) is to create opportunities for faculty and staff to learn about technology, pedagogy, instructional resources, and best practices to enhance the effectiveness of teaching, learning, and leadership at the college. Throughout the semester, we will offer a variety of workshops/trainings for you to attend. These will be announced via email, the campus chronicle and will be posted on the CET website (https://www.hvcc.edu/dept/cet/index.html).

We are currently looking for ideas for workshops, especially in the area of technology. If you have ideas/suggestions for a workshop and/or would like to present a workshop, please let me know.

In addition to workshops, the CET coordinates the Faculty Mentors in the Faculty Resource Room (BTC 1052). Faculty mentors are “go-to” people who have been cross-trained on the equipment that any faculty member will encounter in the classroom. Mentors can help with the instructor consoles, basic computer tasks, computer software, and pedagogical areas such as learning styles, syllabi, and with quick questions about the campus in general. Mentors will be available daily and a schedule, once finalized, will be posted on the CET website.

Lastly, the Faculty Resource Room is available for use by all faculty. Located in BTC 1052, the Faculty Resource room offers faculty the opportunity to experiment with technology similar to what is available in the classrooms and computer labs. It is also a place where faculty can complete other tasks that include photocopying, grading, reading, or conducting brief meetings in between classes. The room is equipped with a photocopier, computers, scantron, and color printer. We invite you to stop in anytime to explore the facilities. To access the Faculty Resource Room, use the code for the keypad on the door. If you do not have the code, it is available in the Center for Effective Teaching (BTC 1042) during regular business hours. If the CET is closed, call (518) 629-7210 and someone from the Office of Public Safety will provide the code.

I look forward to working with you.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
