Auditions for the Theatre Arts Program’s spring production, Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill, will be held this Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 8 pm, and Thursday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre, located in the Siek Campus Center.
No preparation is necessary, but interested students are encouraged to read or view the play before auditioning due to its mature content. Auditioners will read from the script with fellow auditioners and may also be asked to improvise. If you are not able to attend either audition session, please contact faculty director Rosanne Raneri at r.raneri@hvcc.edu to arrange an alternate audition time.
There are seven roles in the play: a primary cast and full understudy cast will be selected. The primary cast will be required to attend a minimum of three, 3-hour-long rehearsals a week, and the understudy cast will be required to memorize lines, attend regular rehearsals, and give one matinee performance.
Performances will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 30 – May 2, at 7:30 p.m. The understudy performance will be held Saturday, May 1 at 2 p.m. Technical and dress rehearsals will be held Saturday, April 25 through Wednesday, April 29 and may not be missed.
Considered a postmodern landmark play, Cloud 9 is a provocative drama-comedy that explores the historic and modern conditions of gender and sexuality. The play begins in 1879 with an English family taking part in the colonialization of African territories, and moves one 100 years into the future, to England in 1979, with the same English family members aging only twenty-five years. The play is unique in that it also requires actors to switch roles in Act II.
