Distance and Online Learning Training Schedule and Faculty Support Service

Training Opportunities

The Center for Distance and Online Learning has a full portfolio of options for all faculty, regardless of skill level, who need to work remotely or online for any reason.

If you are new to any of the tools or strategies of teaching remotely or online we have created a “Rapid Deployment” package that includes an import of an “essentials” template into your course, an online training resource, face-to-face training sessions, one-on-one assistance and, where needed, services to build out critical parts of your course.

We are also offering workshops on synchronous and asynchronous video tools to help you work remotely or online with your class using simple video tools.

  • Our training sessions will take place in one-hour time frames, beginning March 12, 2020, and running through (at least) March 28, 2020.
  • Please check the updated SCHEDULE OF TRAINING SESSIONS to make sure you have the correct time and location.
  • If you can, please bring the device you are planning on using at home (phone, laptop, iPad, other).
  • Sign up for sessions with Tara Farley-Wyckoff at (518) 629-7291, or email t.farleywyckoff@hvcc.edu.
  • Drop-ins are also welcome as space allows.

Workshop Descriptions

Rapid Deployment Training

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Blackboard by importing a template that you can add your content to. If you would like, you can bring any digital materials you have for your course(s).

Zoom Training

In this workshop, you will learn how to use Zoom for “live” lectures. Zoom is a live video meeting tool, like Skype or GoToMeeting. Zoom allows you to meet “synchronously,” or in real-time, with your students. Zoom can allow you to continue to hold class meetings at their regularly scheduled time, with you and your students participating at a distance/remotely. Zoom allows meeting participants to join the meeting via a computer (with webcam and microphone), a smartphone (through the Zoom app), or a landline phone by dialing into a specific phone number. Participants can also combine these methods – someone on a computer with no webcam or microphone could follow along with whatever is on screen through their computer, and join the Zoom call audio by dialing in.

TechSmith Relay

In this workshop, you will learn how to use TechSmith Relay for pre-recorded video lecture materials. TechSmith Relay is a lecture capture or screen recording software that allows you to record your slideshows, screen, or face and voice. It can be used to pre-record the course content to put online. TechSmith Relay is an “asynchronous” tool, meaning you will record the lecture content ahead of time, edit it if need be, and put it in Blackboard for your students to watch. TechSmith Relay is not a live video.

VoiceThread

In this workshop, you will learn how to use VoiceThread for lectures, discussions, or assignments. VoiceThread is an interactive collaboration and sharing tool that enables users to add images, documents, and videos, and to which other users can add voice, text, audio file, or video comments.

Collaborate

In this workshop, you will learn how to use Blackboard Collaborate for “live” lectures. Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool that allows for real-time discussion between you and your students, supports break out groups, has a chat function, the whiteboard can be used to present content and do annotation, and you can conduct polling during the discussion. You can also record the session and share it with those students who are unavailable during the meeting time. Students can present or comment on your presentations to demonstrate knowledge or skills.
