Congratulations to all 205 participants who attended 1-4 (or more!) training sessions each since just last Thursday. It has been an honor to work with you all, and we have learned a great deal about how we can help you meet this remote instruction challenge. Our second week of training will reflect this new perspective as well as providing staff support during the big push before we go live on Monday, March 30.
Week two of the training for emergency remote instruction will have several different formats in order to maintain social distancing, but also provide targeted instruction.
Please see the updated training schedule! The training schedule and additional resources can also be found on the Blackboard Support and Training Tab.
- Remote training from Distance Learning Classrooms with optional “bring your own device” attendance for Zoom, Tech/Smith Relay, and Rapid Deployment. Register for remote and a meeting link will be sent to you. Attendance in person with your device is limited to fewer than 10 people.
- One-on-One consulting with an Instructional Designer will be available by appointment as listed on the training schedule. These are 45-minute sessions designed to help you pull together your remote teaching strategy and address any lingering concerns. These are in-person troubleshooting sessions so be sure to bring your device(s)
- Walk-in and Remote Clinics will take place on Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring your device, your concern or challenge, and someone will help you or connect you with the appropriate staff. Walk-in or request a Zoom meeting so we can send you a link.
Accommodations/Accessibility: As we pull together our remote teaching strategies, we have all been asked to pay attention to our students with accommodations, and to incorporate accessible content and tools in our remote teaching. Do you need help with that? Contact us at dlhelp@hvcc.edu for accessibility help, or check in with the CAATs office if you know your student has special accommodations.
Digital Exams: If you need help converting your exams or quizzes into digital format for Blackboard, please contact dlhelp@hvcc.edu and let us know what you need. We can convert and upload your exams for you, faster than you can retype them question by question.
Regular and Substantive Interaction: while we are scrambling to assemble our content and strategies, please remember that one of the most important aspects of working remotely or online is to communicate regularly with your students. This is a basic requirement for online courses as mandated by U.S. Dept of Education, and while it will be rougher and perhaps more creative under these emergency circumstances, we are reminded that it is still required. It is also something students say they find most valuable. If you need help with communication tools for your remote teaching, please contact dlhelp@hvcc.edu for assistance. We can set you up with a wide variety of different tools and match the best tool with your skill level, course pedagogy, and discipline.
Do you need professional video footage? If you take things apart or put things together or work in a lab or other hands-on situation, you may need better videos than your phone will provide. John Yost and his video professionals in HVCC Video Services have offered their services in and out of the studio to help you with high-quality video for your students. Contact him at (518) 629-7716 or j.yost@hvcc.edu in BTC 1082. Tell him DL sent you!
Lastly, a great resource from Quality Matters:
Remote Instruction ≠ Online Learning
A few file uploads and a Zoom meeting link do not equal an online course. You know this. You want a learning environment that sets students up for success — despite emergency circumstances. Enter the QM Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI) Checklist for Higher Ed and K-12. These published Google Docs are a tool to help us all remember the student perspective when a face-to-face course suddenly changes modality.
