Words of Wellness

On one Wednesday, each month over the summer, the Wellness Center at Hudson Valley Community College will be posting Words of Wellness. Words of Wellness are resources for students to access and utilize to improve and maintain their overall wellness.

While the Wellness Center’s Counseling Services are available Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (summer hours) for counseling, consultation, and referral needs, we wanted to share additional resources that may be beneficial.

This week we will be discussing Wellness. As we finish up Summer courses and get ready for the Fall semester, it is a great time to start to focus on our wellness and find ways we can integrate wellness activities into our daily routines. Wellness can be defined in many different ways.  The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as being “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.  The following resources from the National Wellness Institute, will highlight six dimensions of wellness and ways for us to attend to these various areas of wellness in a holistic encompassing lifestyle.

Six Dimensions of Wellness Handout

By applying the Six Dimensional Model, a person becomes aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to healthy living. This holistic model explains:

  • How a person contributes to their environment and community, and how to build better living spaces and social networks,
  • The enrichment of life through work, and its interconnectedness to living and playing,
  • The development of belief systems, values, and creating a world-view,
  • The benefits of regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, strength and vitality as well as personal responsibility, self-care and when to seek medical attention,
  • Self-esteem, self-control, and determination as a sense of direction,
  • Creative and stimulating mental activities, and sharing your gifts with others.

Wholeness Reflection Exercise

During the NWC 2018 facilitated Audacity of Wholeness key-note by Dr. Joel Bennett, participants were asked to complete the wholeness exercise AND share their experience with others.

Both steps (internal reflection and safe sharing) are key. As part of this exercise, participants watched the message from Howie Mandel linked below.

Please feel free to share these instructions with others.

1) Download and Complete the Wholeness Reflection Exercise

2) Share the exercise with a friend or colleague

3) Click here to watch the video of Howie Mandel and ask your friend to do so as well

4) Take turns sharing your thoughts.
