Expanded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits

Food insecurity and hunger can affect anyone. Under federal law, college students who are between the ages of 18 and 49 years old and are attending an institution of higher education at least half-time (6 credits or more) MAY be eligible to receive food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) if they meet certain criteria. One of the criteria is participation in a program of career and technical education as defined under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (see 7 CFR 273.5). Many degree and certificate programs at Hudson Valley qualify.

Hudson Valley Community College cannot determine whether you are eligible for SNAP. That determination is made by each county’s local Department of Social Services. To check your eligibility, visit mybenefits.ny.gov.

A completed SNAP Student Enrollment Verification Form (LDSS-5172) must be submitted with a SNAP application to verify that you are enrolled at least half-time in a program of career and technical education as defined under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, and therefore satisfy the requirements of this criteria. To receive a completed form to accompany your SNAP application, complete the top portion of the SNAP Student Enrollment Verification Form (LDSS-5172) and submit the form to the Registrar’s Office to have it completed and signed. Please contact the Registrar’s Office at (518) 629-4574 or registrar@hvcc.edu with any questions.

A list of food insecurity resources is available on SUNY’s Food Secure Beyond Subsistence webpage. In addition, Hudson Valley Community College is proud to offer the Viking Cupboard Food Pantry located in the Student Activities Office (Campus Center, room 210). The Viking Cupboard is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and students just need to present current HVCC ID. For more information about the HVCC Viking Cupboard, please contact the Student Activities Office at (518) 629-7348.
