Dear campus community,
I hope this posting finds everyone healthy and well. I’d like to update the campus community on various programs and initiatives the Athletics Department is or will be offering for the fall semester.
— We have held one-on-one Zoom meetings with each of our student-athletes to review their class schedules (making sure they know the difference between online, remote, and hybrid), to ensure they know how to use Blackboard and Wired, and to reinforce the academic resources the college has to offer.
— We have held individual team meetings with our coaches and student-athletes to provide them with updates and to check on their wellbeing.
— The department launched its first Esports program for the Fall 2020 semester. Hudson Valley now has the most sport offerings (20) in Region 3 of the NJCAA.
— We have teamed up with Volt Athletics to offer all of our student-athletes an app-based individualized, personal training program that they can do on their own. The program can create workouts for student-athletes who have access to weights and equipment or can provide workouts for those without, using bodyweight, pylometrics, speed training, etc.
— Athletics and Cultural Affairs have partnered to present motivational speaker, Damon West, via Zoom for our student-athletes. West has traveled throughout the United States to speak to large NCAA Division 1 programs, sharing his inspiring story. Hudson Valley will be his first “appearance” at a community college. (West will present two, virtual programs: a live webinar for student-athletes only and a live webinar for the general public. Visit https://events.hvcc.edu/event/damon-west-motivational-speaker/ for details.)
— We are promoting “Wellness Wednesdays” on our social media accounts to encourage student-athletes to use the Counseling and Wellness Center.
— Beginning on Sept. 29, we will be slowly phasing in our low- and moderate-risk sports at our outdoor facilities. Student-athletes will be tested weekly, and will be required to social distance and wear masks.
— Intramurals will offer virtual yoga and boxing classes.
In closing, I want to sincerely extend my gratitude to all of the offices on campus who have helped assist our department and student-athletes through these challenging times. Everyone has gone above and beyond and we greatly appreciate it.
Go Vikings!
