Sad News: the passing of Dean Emeritus Christine Helwig

The college is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dean Emeritus Christine Helwig on Thursday. Details on services to remember Chris will be announced in a subsequent obituary.

Chris spent more than 30 years of her career at Hudson Valley Community College and served as a mentor to many current and former employees of the college. She retired as Dean Emeritus in 2018.

Chris began her career at Hudson Valley in 1980 as a Personnel Technician and moved on to subsequent positions with increasing responsibility in the Office of Continuing Education, serving as Assistant Director, Associate Director, Interim Dean, and Director of Community and Professional Education, compiling a reputation in all these positions for her professionalism, diligence and good nature.

In 2015, she was named Dean of Educational Outreach and Academic Services, where she was given even further responsibility that was met with her good nature and her solid work ethic as she led the Distance Learning Office, College in the High School programs, and the Center for Effective Teaching as well as Community and Professional Education and the Scheduling Office.

She was recognized with the Department Chairperson’s Recognition Award, the Marco J. Silvestri Award for Service to the Academic Senate and, finally, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 2004.
