Honors College Students Eager to Serve the Community!

With the fall semester only weeks away, incoming members of the new Honors College were eager for volunteer and fellowship opportunities. On July 30, they gathered at the Northeast Regional Food Bank to help sort a truckload of donations from Walmart consisting of various cleaning products, toys and personal hygiene products.

Many of the products were returned items that instead of restocking were donated to help those in need. Students sorted and packed 29 pallets of an impressive variety of items, including laundry detergent, Swiffer mops, pool toys, and even hair accessories. The donations would then be picked up by a third party reclamation center to distribute the items to selected non-profit agencies in the northeastern service area.

After volunteering, the students enjoyed ice cream and socialized at the Control Tower Ice Cream Shop in Latham. Located adjacent to the Albany Airport, they enjoyed “shouting” fun facts about each other as loud airplanes were passing above. The gorgeous weather and gregarious students certainly made it a fun and memorable experience!
