Hello students, faculty and staff,
The staff in Counseling and Wellness Services hopes you are all doing well as we continue to navigate these difficult times. We hope you have had a great first half of the semester! As we begin the second half of the semester, we wanted to connect with you all and share some updates about our services.
Counseling and Wellness Services is available to all currently registered students for short-term individual counseling and wellness needs. Our staff of licensed mental health counselors is here to support you and help you achieve your academic and life goals.
We offer individual counseling and wellness sessions that last up to 45 minutes per session. Brief consultation sessions — lasting up to 30 minutes to discuss the Academic Waiver process, discuss and provide referrals to both on campus and off campus resources specific to the student’s current needs, and other brief mental health or wellness concerns — are also offered.
Sessions are scheduled on the hour, starting at 9 a.m. with our last session scheduled at 3 p.m. Counseling and Wellness Services are located on the second floor of the Siek Campus Center in the Wellness Center, room 260. Look for the signs directing you to our temporary side entrance.
In addition to the in-person counseling appointments available on campus, we will continue to offer our services remotely, either by phone or via Zoom for the safety and wellness of our students and staff.
When calling (518-629-7320) or emailing (counseling@hvcc.edu) to make an appointment with a counselor, please indicate the method of telecounseling (phone or Zoom) you prefer, along with your name, date of birth, Hudson Valley ID number (H00), a phone number and your HVCC email address.
In the event of a mental health crisis, Public Safety (518-629-7210), located on the first floor of the Siek Campus Center, is the point of contact, both during and outside of normal business hours. Public Safety will connect with a counselor from Counseling and Wellness Services, during normal business hours, as needed, to address the student’s concerns.
Additional community crisis resources (listed below) also are available to our students. Students can also visit our webpage for additional information about Community Crisis Resources.
Middle Earth through SUNY Albany (peer-to-peer support): 518-442-5777
- Students experiencing feelings such as loneliness, depression, anxiety, or uncertainty can call the hotline to connect with a trained student peer. Students do not need to be in crisis to use this hotline. It’s a stigma-free, secure line for connecting about emotional, social, and other life issues.
- The hotline is open 1 p.m. through midnight Monday through Thursday, and operates 24/7 over the weekend, beginning on Fridays at 1 p.m. and closing on Sundays at 11:59 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters.
- Trained peers from the Middle Earth program also offer virtual “hangout spaces” over Zoom Monday through Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. during each semester to provide an additional source of connection for students in quarantine or isolation.
SUNY Crisis Text Line available 24/7: To access the crisis text line, students simply text Got5U to 741-741
- The crisis text line is a confidential text line available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Crisis counselors support students experiencing feelings of isolation, stress, or thoughts about suicide. With an emphasis on building rapport and trust, crisis counselors help texters explore the issues, establish the texter’s goal, and collaboratively problem-solve to come up with a plan for the texter to stay safe.
We look forward to working with all of you this semester. Students, faculty, and staff, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by phone at (518) 629-7320 or via email at counseling@hvcc.edu if you have any questions or concerns about our services.
We are here to support you!
Best wishes for the remainder of the semester,
The Staff at Counseling and Wellness Services
