SUNY Transformation Fund Supports HVCC Students

SUNY has approved HVCC’s plan for use of $1.1 million allocated from the SUNY Transformation Fund. The SUNY Transformation Fund is structured to support evidence-based strategies from a menu of specific uses that support innovation, help meet the workforce needs of the future, enhance student support services, improve academic programs, increase enrollment and modernize campus operations.

HVCC’s approved plan includes two initiatives:

  1. HVCC will replicate CUNY’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) model, a rigorously evaluated and nationally recognized comprehensive associate degree completion program that consistently doubles the three-year completion rates of participating students versus those of statistically matched comparison students. ASAP provides integrated resources and financial supports and a program design that removes barriers to full-time study, helps students gain and maintain academic momentum, creates a connected community, and enhances students’ sense of belonging. HVCC plans to serve approximately 150 students over three years through ASAP.
  2. HVCC seeks to increase enrollment among traditionally underserved populations (including refugee and immigrant populations) in technology programs in order to meet local demands, address the trade industry skills gap and grow the region’s economy. HVCC plans to serve approximately 88 students on a two-year timeline. By 2024, nearly half of all job openings will be “middle-skill” positions that require education beyond high school, but not a bachelor’s degree. New York State and the United States is currently experiencing a severe skilled labor shortage. To help address this need, HVCC will use funding to provide essential student supports to the target population, including but not limited to:
    • tuition assistance;
    • enhanced ESL instruction;
    • targeted academic coaching and career counseling;
    • financial assistance to scale barriers related to transportation, daycare, food insecurity and books and supplies; and
    • supplemental instruction.
