Theatre Arts students offer three performances of “Dog Sees God” beginning today (Dec. 18)

Hudson Valley Community College’s Theatre Arts Program presents pre-recorded live performances of “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” by Burt V. Royal. Performances are slated for viewing on Friday, Dec. 18, Saturday, Dec. 19, and Sunday, Dec. 20. The student company has been developing the show remotely since September and is excited to have the opportunity to share it!

Please visit the college’s web calendar at events.hvcc.edu for information on how to access a performance.

“Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” continues the story of the Peanuts gang created by Charles M. Schulz. When his beloved beagle is killed after a rabid rampage, CB is plunged into serious depression. Introspective and concerned with the afterlife, he is no longer satisfied with his high school status as a good-looking bully. Writing to a childhood pen pal who has never written back, CB confesses his doubts and fears and describes his daily interactions with his community: his angsty, performance artist sister, aggressive buddy Matt, mean girls Marcy and Tricia, and stoned philosopher Van.

When he unexpectedly connects with Beethoven, a childhood friend who had become a target of his group’s homophobic bullying, CB thinks he’s found both a relationship and a means to rebel against his predictable, doormat persona. But he may have to lose everything to gain a different perspective.

Sex, drugs, bullying, violence, mental illness, toxic friendships, and death are some of the things that the now-older characters of Charles Schulz’s iconic and beloved comic strip now face, but Royal’s “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” is a genuine and genuinely moving update for the Peanuts gang. The show is a heartfelt comedic drama and strong ensemble piece that explores the challenges of high school and growing up. (The play runs about 1 hr 40 min.)
