HVCC student attains rank of Eagle Scout

Victoria Bubie, an Early Childhood major, is a “rare bird” as one of the first young women to earn the coveted Scouts BSA rank of Eagle Scout. Scouts BSA is a program within the Boy Scouts of America.

When the Scouts BSA announced that young women could earn the Eagle Scout rank — an achievement only four percent of all scouts have ever reach, Tori knew she had to achieve this honor.

Tori wanted to join scouts since her younger brother did, but had to wait to join Venturing at 14. Venturing is an older, co-educational outdoor leadership and adventuring program in Scouts. When the news that a Troop was forming in Rotterdam, Tori leapt at the opportunity, and served as the Senior Patrol Leader, a position of great responsibility. Tori also served as a Crew President of a Venturing Crew, a Crew Vice President, and as leader for the entire 13-county region known locally as the Twin Rivers Council. Tori led and taught the Kodiak challenge, a six-day-and-night trip founded in the principles of servant leadership. The experiential learning challenge was the first of its kind locally in almost 25 years.

Not one to rest on her efforts, Tori is also a Girl Scouts Gold Award winner, and her service projects for both awards have had long lasting, positive impacts in her community. Tori planned, lead and reported on two significant efforts to improve her hometown, starting with a music program for children for her Gold Award, and then creating a new program area for the town summer camp for her Eagle Award.

Tori has been recognized for her leadership with the Venturing Leadership award, limited to two awards annually in the 13-county region.

Tori’s work experience includes serving locally on summer camp staff, specializing in working with disadvantaged youth and scouts, who are neuro atypical. These experiences, coupled with her HVCC course work, have led her to SUNY Potsdam for a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education next year.

One piece of advice this outstanding student gives to her peers and others is simple: “Don’t be afraid to fail, learn and try again.”

Tori has definitely persisted!

If you see Tori, please congratulate her on this historic feat.
