Over 500 Special Olympic athletes were at the Queensbury High School the evening of Oct. 20 for the opening ceremonies of the Fall 2023 Games, and the opportunity to participate in the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program. The games followed on Saturday at various locations in Queensbury and Glens Fall.
The Healthy Athletes Program is an inter-collaborative program to screen athletes participating in the Fall Games for various health concerns and to verify that they have a medical/dental home provider. Disciplines in attendance ranged from Healthy Smiles, Fit Feet, Healthy Hearing and Health Promotion. Screenings were done in a fun, interactive way involving the many volunteers and the athletes and their families.
A special thank you to the Special Smiles team which was run entirely by HVCC Power. In attendance as volunteers were dentists from the Dental Hygiene Department’s Advisory Board and DHY faculty, plus current students and alumni from the classes of 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. The heavy rains required a last-minute location change, but this event still was a huge success thanks to the flexibility, care and compassion displayed by all our volunteers
We’re indebted to them all for their help and support! Thank you!!
