New Microcredential: Animal Law

Animal Law, Ethics and Enforcement Microcredential

This six-credit Animal Law, Ethics and Enforcement microcredential provides an introduction to society’s duty of care to animals, and enforcement of laws regarding the treatment of animals.

Students who complete this microcredential will be acquainted with the fundamental principles of animal law and ethics locally, nationally and internationally.

CRJS 134, Animal Law and Ethics, offers insight into the legal and ethical status of cats in NYS, animals in entertainment, Ringling Bros. and SeaWorld, animal fighting and breed specific legislation, horses, racing and slaughter, industry standards for animals in agriculture, animals in experimentation, dealing dogs, puppy mills, wildlife, animals used for clothing, and the global view.

CJRS 138, Animal Law Enforcement, includes New York State Agriculture and Markets Law Article 26, the animal cruelty law, as well as Article 7 (Dog Control), search warrant procedure and drafting accusatory instruments, court documents necessary for law enforcement to handle these cases and dangerous dogs cases. \

Students who complete this microcredential will have a better understanding of New York State Law pertaining to the protection of animals and the proper handling of animal cruelty cases in the criminal justice system.
