This past fall, the Department of Dental Hygiene piloted incorporating artificial intelligence into the dental hygiene curriculum for freshmen and senior dental hygiene students as a way to enhance student engagement and promote critical thinking among Millennial and Gen Z students.
The artificial intelligence software is called eHuman. It offers students and educators a revolutionary, 3D interactive learning experience to facilitate learning in a unique and non-traditional way.
The user-friendly technology offers extensive 3D anatomic models, video clips, and interactive images along with self-assessment quizzes and games that test student knowledge. The technology is delivered to the student through Virtual Reality glasses, the computer screen, and on their mobile device.
Our talented faculty witnessed a strong connection between learning something and also experiencing what has been learned. Artificial intelligence is a resource that allows for an experience to be created while learning simultaneously. The technology creates a lasting memory for the students because there are multiple sensory inputs, such as sight, sound and touch, being utilized when the student is hands-on with the software.
The instructor can engage the class by utilizing Virtual Reality glasses to display anatomical features and information, in what seems like “right before the student’s eyes.”
Together, these features allow the dental hygiene students to take their newfound knowledge and successfully apply it to clinical application.
Dental Hygiene is “all in” to continue to implement AI in our curriculum as it has shown to be a valuable resource for students learning complex and abstract subject areas.
