Nominate Your Students for the Bulmer Award!

The Dwight Marvin Library faculty welcomes students and faculty to nominate research papers for consideration for the Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research.

The award is named for Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer, who served as president of Hudson Valley Community College from 1979-1996, and funded this prestigious award through the college’s Foundation. It recognizes academic scholarship in library-based research.

The tools to help students succeed are right here in the Marvin Library Learning Commons: research librarians and writing specialists in the Writing and Research Center, individualized research appointments and LAC workshops, just to name a few.

The recipient receives a monetary award, is recognized at the Student Honors Convocation, in the commencement program, and is listed on a perpetual plaque in the Dwight Marvin Library Learning Commons.

The nomination deadline is Friday, April 23 for the 2020-21 award. One recipient is selected each year.

Criteria
A winning paper will meet all of the following:

  • Grade of A
  • Extensive bibliography with a minimum of five sources. Papers having fewer than five sources are not eligible. More quality sources are preferred.
  • Evidence of initiative, persistence, and ingenuity in identifying sources. Papers with a variety of sources are ranked more highly. For example, a paper including books, academic journals, newspapers and credible websites will rank more highly than a paper using mainly websites.
  • Evidence of critical thinking in evaluating sources for credibility and appropriateness. Depending on the assignment and subject matter, seminal works, core journals and critical sources are preferred. For example, if you are writing a research paper on the legacy of Adolf Hitler, including his autobiography Mein Kampf, a newspaper article written during his lifetime (the library has access to the historical New York Times!), or an interview with a Holocaust survivor/descendant demonstrates great critical thinking and initiative.
  • Correct citation format.
  • Authentic academic work, i.e., free of plagiarism. (Papers may be reviewed using turnitin.com or similar software.)
