2021 Commencement Update

We are hard at work preparing to celebrate the achievements of more than 1,500 remarkable Hudson Valley graduates during Commencement events on Saturday, May 15. Please plan to participate in this year’s celebration in any way that you can. Below is a reminder of dates, deadlines and details along with an important update on our virtual celebration. Complete information is available on the college’s Commencement webpage.

As announced, this year’s festivities include four short, in-person ceremonies at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Students will be provided with two guest tickets, and each ceremony will be live streamed, so family and friends who cannot attend in person can still have the opportunity to watch the ceremony online in real time. Note: Graduates must pre-register by Monday, May 3 in order to participate. See the On Campus Commencement Ceremonies webpage for more information.

Faculty and staff have the option to attend in-person commencement ceremonies to celebrate our graduates or work during the events. If you would like to attend or work at one of the ceremonies, please complete this registration form as soon as possible.

New York State requires that all attendees of an on-campus ceremony show proof of either a recent negative COVID-19 PCR test result (within 72 hours of the event) or proof of completed vaccination (at least 14 days before the event) prior to entry. See Health Screening and Testing/Vaccination Requirements for additional information.

Cap and gown pickup will be held in the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium from May 5 to May 7. Student Activities’ staff will be on hand to help students, answer questions, distribute tickets, and take photos and video footage of graduates for our virtual celebration.

The college’s virtual Commencement Celebration continues to take shape with one change. Author and activist Alice Walker will no longer be a part of the video. Since announcing her involvement, members of our community have expressed concerns about comments Ms. Walker made in a 2018 New York Times article that many consider controversial. We recognize her valuable contributions to literature, education and civil rights, but the situation is a distraction from what should be a meaningful celebration of our students’ achievements, so we have changed course.

As always, if you have any questions about any aspect of Commencement, please contact my office or our Student Activities Office at (518) 629-7348 or studentactivities@hvcc.edu.

Thank you.
