PTK members have a Mc-real-good time volunteering at Regional Food Bank

Members of the HVCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY in Latham on July 26.

The food bank recently received a large donation of frozen McRib® patties from a local McDonald’s franchise. Yes, McRib®. Donning fishnet caps and gloves, volunteers strategically placed individual size frozen patties in large, plastic bags. The challenge was to get between 17-19 patties in a bag and be able to tie it shut. Six filled bags were then packed into a box along with an ingredient and nutrition label. Averaging 18 patties per bag, 16,200 McRib® patties packaged that day! These boxes were to be distributed the following day to various drive-through food pantries in the Capital Region.

Drive-through food pantries have become instrumental in reaching people in need, especially during the pandemic. In 2019, the Northeastern Regional Food Bank served 289,000 individuals. This number increased by over 100,000 in 2020 with the onset of the pandemic.

The PTK volunteers again took this opportunity to help the community, one of the core values of Phi Theta Kappa. With its purpose of developing leadership and service, Phi Theta Kappa promotes academic excellence and fellowship for all its members. This is why members are proud to say #IAMPTK.
