New and returning students in the Fine Arts Program celebrated the opening of the new drawing and painting studios, located on the third floor of Amstuz Hall, with a “welcome all” open house and pizza party on Sept. 12.
Students and faculty toured the new spaces, socialized and viewed “Out of Office – Summer Studio Work by Fine Arts and Digital Media Faculty,” the inaugural exhibit at ProjectSpace 320, a small gallery/project space located within the drawing studio.
The drawing and painting studios were housed in Hudson Hall since 1993 and in a purpose-built extension since 1995. The new Amstuz studios follow an extensive renovation of former chemistry/forensics labs and feature drawing and painting studios, a critique space, storage, office space, and the ProjectSpace. Demolition and renovation took place over the summer break with the move from Hudson to the new spaces immediately prior to (and even during) the start of Fall semester classes.
Scott Hathaway is chair of the Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media Department, which is part of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Tyler Kessel is dean.
The department would like to thank Physical Plant – Larry Lavigne, Jeff Herrington and Andrew Novak – as well as the Maintenance and Special Assignment crews who got the space up and running, including moving truckloads of equipment to Amstuz. Special thanks to Donal Christian, vice president for Administration and chief financial officer, for his support of this project.
Members of the campus community are welcome to peek in at the new studios and visit the PS320 exhibition.
