LGBT History Month

In October, we celebrated LGBT History Month. An important milestone for the LGBT community occurred last month, so we’d like to highlight this historic moment. Dr. Rachel Levine became an admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

  • In October, she became the highest ranking, openly transgender, four-star official in the United States’ eight uniformed services
  • She is the first woman four-star admiral in the commissioned corps.
  • She’s a pediatrician
  • She’s a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine
  • She’s held previous positions as the Pennsylvania physician general and as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health
  • She’s served as a board member of Equality Pennsylvania, an LGBT rights organization called .

In a speech that paid tribute to other LGBTQ individuals who came before her, Dr. Levine said, “May this appointment today be the first of many more to come, as we create a diverse and more inclusive future.”
