On October 4, students from the Honors College engaged in an informative session about preparing for and setting goals for a prosperous future. The lively presentation was led by Mr. George Ambriz, Dean of Enrollment at HVCC, and Eduard Horanlli, HVCC Class of 2024 & Honors College alumnus currently studying at Columbia University. Mr. Ambriz shared his life experiences highlighting his academic journey from attending a community college, transferring to a 4-year institution, to completing his graduate studies. He also shared insight about his unique career path and the important skill sets he developed from each of his positions of employment. Mr. Ambriz’s intentional choices throughout his journey inspired him to always aim higher and lift others up with him. His presentation left the students inspired and focused to find their own unique path of success and to stay humble and appreciative for the opportunities they have.
The insight Eduard shared with the students brought the whole session full circle as he commended the experience he had at HVCC and the Honors College to help him prepare for life beyond HVCC. As many students know, the process of transferring can seem quite daunting and uncertain. Eduard reassured the students that the resources at HVCC made this process much more manageable. He commended the support he got from his professors, the advisors at the Center for Career and Transfer and the writing specialists in the Writing Center. Having only applied to HVCC when he was in high school, Eduard was unfamiliar with the intricate application process for various colleges and admitted that transferring to Columbia University seemed out of reach. Just as Mr.Ambriz had done, Eduard encouraged the students to recognize their full potential and not allow self-doubt to hold them back from the amazing possibilities that lie ahead. The valuable insight from both presentations reinforced that a Hudson Valley Community College education is a tremendous catalyst for a successful future.
