My Eyes Are My Ears; My Hands Are My Voice

Elizabeth Galvan, Patrick Harris and Michael Anthony Spady, three Deaf adults, discuss growing up Deaf in a hearing world and describe how they were uniquely prepared for the isolation so many experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conversation will explore what the hearing can learn from the Deaf to become better listeners.

Melissa Kate Adams-Silva, who teaches American Sign Language at HVCC, will moderate the panel that is part of Voices: A Library Lecture Series.

Elizabeth Galvan
Deaf since the age of three, Galvan has overcome numerous obstacles to achieve her dream: to inspire and help people to believe in themselves with the principles of “I can.” She is a professional body builder and has worked at Wal-Mart for over 18 years. A single mother who has Usher Syndrome, she and her daughter live in North Dakota.

Patrick Harris (center)
Harris, born Deaf, studied automotive technology at a mainstream high school and earned a degree in social work from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He worked in social service programs for Deaf adults before becoming a Deaf interpreter in 2016. He lives in Vermont with his husband of 11 years and is an avid disc golf player.

Michael Anthony Spady
Spady is a Deaf actor who first appeared on stage at age nine. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY, and graduated from RIT with a degree in business. Now based in California, his recent acting work includes roles in “Cold Case,” “Love That Girl,” “The New Normal” and “True Blood.” He’s also appeared in many commercials and music videos.
