Professor’s U.S. Supreme Court research informs veteran court reporter’s blog

Semi-retired writer Tony Mauro, who’s reported on the Supreme Court of the United States since 1979, interviewed Dr. Robert “Sid” Whitaker, a professor in the Education and Social Sciences Department, for a recent issue of his blog, The Marble Palace published by the National Law Journal.

Mauro called on Whitaker, who teaches political science, with questions about the role of Supreme Court justices as public speakers throughout their history. The interview is part of the blog post, Justices as Speechmakers. “Supreme Court justices rarely give public speeches unless they are on a book tour,” Mauro writes. “But in recent months, Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito Jr. and Amy Coney Barrett have made headlines with their speeches.”

No doubt, Mauro had read Whitaker’s article, “Defending Democracy: Speeches of the Warren Court Justices and Brown v. Board of Education,” published Oct. 13 in the Journal of Supreme Court History, and decided to call upon Whitaker for more information about and insight into public speaking engagements by Supreme Court justices.
