This week, Counseling Services wanted to once again discuss an important resource for students, faculty, and staff alike: The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The holiday season can be a wonderful, joyous time for many. However, for others, this period can be a stressful, depressing, or even traumatic time. This is especially true of individuals who are living with any mental health or substance use issues. A recent NAMI survey among individuals living with a mental illness said that 64 percent of those participants stated that their symptoms worsened during this period. Whether it is economic issues around gift giving, issues involving the family, or simply shorter days, this time of year can bring a number of mental health challenges to many.

As many of you know, the holiday break is coming soon for students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, for those students not enrolling in Winter classes, there will be a few weeks until students return to campus. Counseling Services wanted to take this time to make sure all are aware of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

You can access the Lifeline by calling or texting 988, as well as chatting through chat.988lifeline.org. With this resource, you will be connected to a trained behavioral health crisis counselor who will listen to you, understand how your problem is affecting you, provide personal support, and get you the help you need. This lifeline is available if you personally are struggling with any mental health concerns, dealing with emotional distress, a substance use issue, or just need someone to talk to. The 988 Lifeline is also available if you are someone that is concerned about a loved one in your life. Counselors are able to provide support in these instances as well.

For more information on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, please visit their website: https://988lifeline.org/. Remember, if you need to talk, the 988 Lifeline is there for you. You are not alone.
