Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, A Black History Month Profile

 

This week for Black History Month, we’re honoring Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a theoretical physicist and the current president of RPI!

  • Jackson was the first African American woman to earn a doctorate from MIT in any field.
  • She conducted innovative research at AT&T Bell Laboratories that led to the following inventions: fiber optic cables, portable fax, solar cells, Touch-Tone telephone, call waiting, and caller ID.
  • She was the first African American and woman appointed by a president to serve as the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • She was appointed as co-chair of President Obama’s Intelligence Advisory Board as well as the President’s Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee..
  • She was awarded the “National Medal of Science” in Physical Sciences in 2014
