Update from Officer in Charge Louis Coplin

Colleagues,

I hope those who had time off for spring break enjoyed some well-deserved rest and time with family and friends! As we look ahead to the final weeks of the term, I write with a few important updates and reminders for all employees.

Summer and Fall Registration

As you know, we’ve seen consistent growth in enrollment and retention in recent years. With your support, our goal is to see that trend continue. Registration for summer and fall classes begins this Thursday, March 27 for returning and transfer students; and Monday, March 31 for new students. I ask that you encourage students to speak to their academic advisors and begin the registration process now.

There are more than 1,500 course sections available for enrollment this summer. Approximately two-thirds of our coursework is offered online, and we have new offerings at the STEM Education Center at HVCC North, including popular science courses. In addition, we are pleased to again offer high school students a full scholarship covering tuition, fees and textbook costs for up to eight credits per student to help them advance their educational goals without incurring college costs. Please spread the word.

April 1 Lunch and Learn Meeting

I hope you will consider attending the Spring semester Lunch and Learn event on April 1 in from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Meeting Rooms (and available via Zoom) to hear a mid-semester briefing on several important college topics. Lunch will be provided, so please register to attend by March 28. I hope you can make it.

Commencement and End-of-Year Ceremonies

I’d also like to share some reminders about year-end celebrations. Commencement will be held in three ceremonies again this year in the McDonough Sports Complex, with the School of STEM ceremony at 9 a.m., the School of Health Sciences ceremony at 11:30 a.m., and the School of Business and Liberal Arts ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.

Please encourage graduating students to attend their school’s ceremony to celebrate with their fellow graduates. They must order regalia by Sunday, March 30 and file a graduate degree/certificate applications by April 7 to be listed in the Commencement program book and publicity materials. Visit the Commencement webpage for more information.

In addition to commencement, I hope you will show your support for our colleagues by attending the Faculty Staff Honors Ceremony on Thursday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m. in the BTC. Our faculty and staff recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award will be celebrated that day, along with recipients of other awards and accolades.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our student recipients of the 2025 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence: Ryan Connors, Erin Satterlee, Austin Shulkin and Katherine Ziegler. They will be recognized along with other winners from the SUNY system at a special ceremony in late April.

Presidential Search

Thank you to all of those who contributed to the search for Hudson Valley’s eighth president. I’m proud of the collaboration, trust and transparency I’ve seen from our campus community during this process. I’m confident that the candidate our community chooses will be able to lead Hudson Valley forward, and our job in the interim in to place the college in a strong position for continued growth; thank you all for continuing to work toward that shared goal.

I’m pleased to report that we are in the final phases of our search; the Board of Trustees will vote this afternoon on a candidate to submit for SUNY approval later in the spring. Please keep an eye out for communications from Board of Trustees Chair Neil Kelleher, who will update the campus community on new developments in the coming weeks.

As always, please continue to keep up the great work in serving our students. As we approach the end of the semester, please know my door remains open if you have questions, concerns, or ideas to share. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Louis Coplin, Officer in Charge
