Members of the HVCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Veterans Miracle Center in Albany on March 21.
PTK volunteers sorted and packed hundreds of donated items in a 22,000-square-foot warehouse for Jezreel International shipments to go to Ukraine and Moldova. Employees at the Veterans Miracle Center welcomed everyone and said Hudson Valley was the only college to send volunteers since COVID-19. The employees were happy to see volunteers, especially since they had just received a large shipment of donated items and could use the extra hands. Volunteers tackled various assignments and helped in areas where they were most needed. Five volunteers helped to fill boxes with personal care and hygiene products, while another group of five sorted household goods and electronics.
Everyone followed safety protocols by removing restricted items such as aerosol cans and by wiping down plastic liquid containers to minimize leakage during shipment. Essential items included soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hair shampoo and conditioner, medical products, and other supplies needed in Ukraine. Items sorted and packed to ship to Moldova consisted of hairpieces, haircare creams, nail grooming kits, and body sprays. Household goods were sorted by clothing, shelving units, electronic equipment, toys, bedsheets and pillows, kitchenware, and more. Both groups took care to pack or sort safe, good, and intact products.
This event provided a unique experience to help those in need. Not only did chapter advisors and members represent Hudson Valley’s international honor society but served as humanitarians and showed how to turn a community of interest into the act of helping others. Volunteers proudly assisted the VMC to prepare Jezreel International shipments of much needed items to those who have been affected by the crisis in Ukraine as well as the people in Moldova. Other donated items may help the VMC to replenish their store for both veterans and active duty service members who express a need.
