In 2023 HVCC became an ECAR (Every Campus a Refuge) chapter. In conjunction with Russell Sage College’s ECAR program, we host and support a refugee family as they arrive in the area, and then move to longer term housing. Faculty, staff and student time and generosity created opportunities for mutual understanding and a softer landing for newcomers. I am so excited to introduce you to our second ECAR family:
Russell Sage College’s ECAR chapter welcomed a new Afghan family of seven last month: Mom, dad, three sons (ages 8, 6, and 4) and two daughters (2.5 year old twins).
We couldn’t be happier to continue our partnership with Russell Sage College by supporting this new family of New Yorkers as they make our community their home.
While a Jan. 20 Executive Order suspended USRAP and refugee resettlement, ECAR was able to partner with No One Left Behind to continue welcoming families with Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs). Afghan SIV holders served alongside U.S. troops, and their families.
They are now settled in an apartment in Albany with immediate needs met. There are still ways to support them, and I will share more opportunities as they arise. Right now we are looking for the following:
- A female Pashto speaking volunteer would be very helpful. Visiting mom weekly or every several weeks would help with community orientation.
- Gift cards for Market 32 or Walmart
- If you would like to make a donation to support living costs, please reach out and I can provide you with a donation link
I am happy to answer other questions about ECAR or ways you can get involved.
