Presented by the Education Club and Education and Social Sciences Department,
working in collaboration with Voices: A Library Lecture Series

All events are in person with the exception of “The Joy of Play,” which will be live streamed.
All are free of charge and open to all. Please attend one, two or all!

Progressive Education in the Early Childhood Setting: Implementing Philosophy into Practice

Tuesday, April 5, 1 – 2 p.m.
Higbee Room 108
Presenter: Leigh Augustine, kindergarten teacher at the Parker School
This workshop will focus on the philosophy of progressive education in an early childhood setting and how to create a student-centered learning community based on children’s interests and development.

Best Books New and Old for Early Childhood

Presenters: Elizabeth Bomba and Ann Marie Helldorfer – The Colonie Library
Masters of the story time and children’s program, Beth and Ann Marie will introduce to you their favorite books that get children excited about reading and promote growth in all the domains!

Engaging Children During Story Time

Maters of the story time and children’s program, Beth and Ann Marie will offer tips to keep all children engaged in participatory story times that will be fun and educational for all!

The Joy of Play: Music and Movement for Young Children

Thursday, April 7, 1 – 1:50 p.m.

Presenter: Hugh Hanley, children’s entertainer and former preschool/toddler teacher
Learn simple songs, finger plays and movement games to have fun with children. Hugh will discuss how these activities are appropriate for various ages and stages of development. This event is part of Voices: A Library Lecture Series.

Working With Children of Divorce

Friday, April 8, 11 a.m. – Noon
Higbee Room 108
Presenter: Carla Gleason, HVCC Faculty
Working with children of divorce: how to approach education with care and compassion. This workshop provides information based on current research regarding the special issues that children of divorce might face. Many times it is difficult for students to concentrate on academics when they are experiencing sadness, guilt, or anxiety. This workshop will offer techniques that can be used by classroom teachers, school counselors and assistants to help develop strategies for improving educational performance for these students.
